Bricks and mortar can make a place special if it's history that you value. But, for pubs, I value good staff above most other things. And this is why I wanted to write this review of the George.
Most Wetherspoons get most things right most of the time, but not all have a coherent and committed staff team who take the time and care to engage with customers, elevating the experience to something that'll be remembered.
The George has a big team - it needs to have as it is always busy - but what makes the George's staff stand out is that they care… they know the regulars and they look after the visitors. It's a perfect example of how a great team culture can add far more to life than (even an admirable) company culture.
We have been coming here on our last night in England. Pub packed on a Friday night. Staff is friendly and the prices very reasonable for good pub grub. We had a well cooked steak, a basic veg curry plus a couple of pints for around £15. Hard to beat. Will keep coming back.
The one negative is that the street around it is becoming a bit “dodgy” - closed stores, panhandlers, etc. But should not be an issue before 8 pm.
No straws for my drink (do we BYO?) Our starters were pretty good but our mains were very overdone. I had a burnt burger bun and beef patty making it really dry and the rest of my burger ingredients were slapped on. We had to walk quite far to get sauce to add to the burger and fries as none were brought to our table. My hubby had a hard, dry chicken piece in his burger. It was a Sunday afternoon but there were no other kids in there at all except ours and most tables full. So not really a family vibe. I love a spoons usually but this was a let down.
When you go for a drink and quick snack at about 10pm in the evening you don't expect to be muscled away from the bar and forced to wait an age to be served at the crowded other one. Further you don't expect when you sit down in an open area to be drowned in wafts of paint varnish, glue or whatever the workman were using in a bar which was still open to the public. Complete contempt for the public and the quality of the beer and food was pretty ropey too.
