A truly traditional pub with a brilliant range of real ales. They do not have a large menu, but what food there is, is good.
There is a friendly welcoming atmosphere when you enter.
Would certainly recommend this wonderful pub to anyone.

A number of us who had travelled to Oswestry for a football match based ourselves here. It's a very welcoming pub, great staff and friendly regulars. If you like your ale and / or gin, this is the place for you.

Not a very extensive menu, but this was more a pub for locals than one for visitors - but the food that was available (scotch eggs etc) was really good & fantastic value.

Atmosphere-perfect. Regret not trying the Scotch Eggs, but we shall return. Friendly to travelers, including the patrons!

We were looking to watch the rugby this weekend, they had the rugby on and served food, bonus.

Someone recommended the locally made Scotch Eggs, they were indeed delicious. I had the chilli variant.

We were seated at the table by the TV, naturally, everyone in the pub was watching the rugby. We asked for the volume to be turned up, as did the other tables next to us. The answer was it was high enough, they could hear it clearly at the back of the pub. That so, there is only one speaker next to the TV and two at the rear of the pub. Guess why the pub was full? We wanted to hear the commentary too!

They did higher it up for a while, after several requests. It also got turned back down again so we couldn't hear anything that was said. Not happy.

It used to be the place to go on a weekend, not so any more, I wonder why.

No it's not from one group, everyone we spoke to said they had difficulty hearing it and that they wouldn't raise the volume.

I haven't posted in a long time but the service was so poor I thought I'd voice my issue.

Not to detract from the food, it was really tasty so well done there.

Thanks for the review. We are not a "sport pub". The only time we have sport on is 6 Nations, Wimbledon and Olympics. We have a lot of regulars, including families with children, who don't want loud sport and come in every Saturday and throughout the week, we have to respect them too. Both my wife and I are rugby fans, we were both members at Harlequins before we moved to Oswestry, so it isn't out of us not wanting it that we choose to keep the volume down. There are other pubs in town which are sports centred and will have the volume up. One other point, we did not publicise we were showing the rugby, it was on as an extra for people who wanted to come and see it in a quieter atmosphere, several regulars commented that they had moved from another pub where it was much louder to watch it as they preferred the atmosphere. We didn't turn it down at all, but as with all things like this, when you turn it up people speak louder, so you have to turn it up more, which is not what we want. As John Lydgate said “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”

As far as "It used to be the place to go on a weekend, not so any more, I wonder why", I'm not sure where you get this idea from, we have been here two years and are busier than ever on weekends.

Pleased you enjoyed the food.
