Description: NEW OWNERS - GRAND OPENING 15TH APRIL 2017!!! Samuel Pepys is a family run country pub and restaurant situated in fantastic countryside location. There are two bar areas offering a great selection of drinks including some local bands. Our food is freshly prepared with local ingredients where possible. We offer great selection of food on lunch times and evenings. Sunday roast with all the trimmings freshly prepared makes it a great place to soak up the countryside atmosphere. We are child and dog friendly and cater for special dietary requirements. Our conservatory is a beautiful setting for private parties & weddings

Enjoyed a group lunch, two courses. Reasonable choice. Food served promptly and was hot. We all sat around a large table in the conservatory. Landlord also thoughtfully opened up prior to our morning walk so that we could have hot tea or coffee.

18 members of our walking group pre-ordered lunch at 9.45am from an extensive two course menu priced at £11.50. We returned at 1.00pm to a beautifully set table in the conservatory with white table cover/napkins and Christmas crackers!! Ewa and Gareth were attentive hosts and the lunch was superb. Everyone commented how nice the pub was and how much they enjoyed the lunch.

Very disappointing Sunday dinner. Out of our table of 8, only 1 person ate their food. The vegetables were hard, potatoes undercooked, tough beef. Those who complained were not offered alternatives. Nobody came to take any drinks orders, nobody came to clear our plates until we asked.
Management were far from gracious when we complained. They offered to deduct money from our bill, which we agreed was reasonable. However, management did not come to our table, we went to find them and no acknowledgement to our feedback of undercooked food, they just told us that the food is locally sourced! Needles to say must of us left hungry, and we won’t be back.

I visited for a Sunday breakfast and was very pleasantly surprised at the vast improvement. The previous disaster was due to a huge number of folk turning up at a time when the staff were badly overloaded. On this occasion the service was superb and I had the Farmers Breakfast. A huge plate with a freshly cooked full English breakfast which was absolutely delicious. My coffee cup was refilled twice by an attentive waitress. My experience on this occasion more than made up for previous disappointment. I will be back.

I had not visited the Samuel Pepys for several years and had heard it had changed hands. We decided to give it a try for Sunday lunch. On arrival it looked as lovely as it used to. The conservatory restaurant with white tablecloths - always a nice touch. Unfortunately, the meal did not live up to expectations. One meal ordered was Chicken Supreme. I always thought that meant it would be in a white sauce, but it was just in a gravy. The chicken was dry and overcooked. It came with seperate vegetables and cauliflour cheese which were very nice. The other meal ordered was Steak and Ale pie. It was enormous and served with leek and potato mash. No extra vegetables? The pie was disappointing. The pastry top was rock hard and could not be cut easily. It actually cracked. The pastry base was not cooked at all. Had it been grilled? The steak was ok, but I expected it to fall apart which it didn't. It seemed only just cooked. The staff were attentive but I'm afraid I will not be visiting again any time soon.
