Off to the beacon to me mcgregors garden. Lovely lady illustrator who showed the children including my grandaughter Abigail, how to use their imagination to draw. 90 min for £5.00!!! Excellent value for money. Different ways of getting them to draw, also music and pinning the tail on Peter rabbit. Crafting veggies for the garden. Plus point whitehaven news arrives taking photos. Loved it. You must visit the bistro too. Value for money. Lovely hot food and fab staff. Then we visited the wellyphants exhibition. Not bad.

An excellent insight into life in Whitehaven. Excellent viewing platform of the harbour. Well laid out with interesting exhibitions both for adults and children. A bit expensive but good if weather isn't great or you want to find out more about Whitehaven and its fascinating history.

Thank you for your kind feedback. If you are a Copeland resident we can offer you a Copeland Pass to visit for free at certain times of the year. We do charge admission for feature exhibitions and this is to help us offer new exhibitions for the public in future

Built in the 1990's as a squat tower with a viewing gallery rather like a stunted light house, the Beacon Museum has a commanding position overlooking Whitehaven Harbour, now largely used as a sheltered marina for a multitude of yachts. Its galleries on four floors include an excellently displayed collection of material relating to local history and a gallery about nuclear power moved here from the Sellafield power stattion. There are spaces for temporary exhibitions currently featuring two cartoonists. Care has been taken to include items appealing to children. There is also a spacious cafe with delicious cakes.

Visited with family (children 10 and 13) and wished we had allowed more than the 2 hours. Exhibits over four floors, and something for all of us to enjoy. Viewing gallery gave great views over the harbour and surrounding area, local history informative and Sellafield exhibition interesting. Also had a couple of ‘special exhibitions’ which vary throughout the year.
Very clean and well laid out. Staff were attentive and were going round resetting interactive displays. Good value (£12.50) for the four of us, and a reasonably priced gift shop. Shame you have to pay for parking.

Thanks for your kind response and glad you enjoyed your visit. We recommend a minimum of 2 hours, but we quite often have people stay all day. Sadly the carparking is outside our control as it is operated by the local council.

Very good local museum with exhibits that had a local flavour with international impact. Sellafield exhibit was slightly apologetic. Classic lines such as “excess nuclear waste retuned to customers abroad” and the windscale disaster occurring due to a “lack of knowledge of nuclear physics”. Very moving auschwitz exhibit when we visited.
