Just returned from a three night stay at Warner’s Alvaston Hall. Somewhat disappointed with our stay. The big attraction for us prior to COVID was the dining experience. The service and choice of food was always exceptional. Post COVID a lot has changed. Breakfast whilst still buffet style you have to queue and wait to have your choice served on your plate. Dinner is table service only and the choice of menu is limited compared with how it was. At both breakfast and dinner service was slow due I’m sure to a shortage of staff. In addition cutlery and water glasses on our table were not always clean.
However the evening entertainment was as good as usual ( with the exception of the comedian ). The in-house entertainment staff always work there socks off to ensure you enjoy yourself.
The daytime entertainment has not changed one bit after 18 months of lockdown. The usual archery, rifles and crossbow but very little entertainment for the ladies in our party.
The nine hole golf course and driving range has been abandoned and is no longer in use.
Personally I feel that Warner’s have become complacent and rely on their past reputation to attract mainly returning guests. They need to take stock and give their product a major shakeup if it is to retain it’s market share of the staycation holiday maker.

Room tip: Fairways wing. Ground floor room with patio.

Stayed here in room 643 16-20 August as part of a coach party.

Had to find our own way to rooms but signs were good. Room was clean and tidy with a lovely view over the grounds. Bed was firm and we slept soundly every night. Bathroom was clean and shower perfectly acceptable. Clean towels every day. Tea/coffee ingredients topped up every day – pint of milk (and 2 bottles of water) in the fridge on arrival which lasted us for our stay – much better than the milk straws or mini-pots!

The hotel was clean throughout and we often passed a cleaner in the corridors morning and evening – they wanted to make sure it was clean.

Swimming pool was long enough to know that a length had been completed but not too exhausted at the end. Communal changing rooms (one male, one female – at least I assume the female was a communal one!) but they were clean. No lockers available but clean towel provided on every visit.

Food was excellent and the waiting staff were fast – some walked miles each sitting. The waiting staff interacted well with the guests although we had better 3 weeks earlier at Gunton Hall (also a Warner Leisure Hotel).

There was a little problem with seating on the Monday night but that was understandable given that 2 coach parties had arrived that afternoon all needing to know which tables they had been allocated. All other meals were fine. Breakfast was collect cereals/fruit/continental but a chef plated up the cooked full English or made to order omelettes. Evening meal was served at the table with a choice of at least 3 starters, 4 main course (incl vegetarian) and 4 puddings. Each one we had was delicious. Whatever you do, don’t eat anything between breakfast and dinner – it is strict diet time for us at the moment!!

We didn’t see much of the entertainment – our choice. However, we did do a few of the quizzes with Lynsey and won Thursday afternoon’s Quest for Knowledge. Lynsey was brilliant with her interaction with the guests and made the events worth going to.

All in all a very happy experience. Will we go back? Yes, when we’ve completed visits to other Warner Leisure Hotels.

We have been going to Warner’s for around 25 years now booking at least 3/4 a year. However, the last visit has been this weekend 20/8/21 we feel this one has been the worst. The food has changed dramatically from buffet service to table service , but they have cut the choices enormously whereby we feel the choices of meals is really poor, beetroot served with every roast dinner we asked for chicken with asparagus last night to find that the asparagus was cut into very thin slices, no sign of a spear as we would have expected when it’s advertised on the menu. The Yorkshire pudding would have been better used as a football. Very shocked to see cheeseburgers on the menu I thought I was in McDonald’s as opposed to a Warner’s hotel. The comedian was the worst I’ve ever heard and the solo singer was very poor. Going back to the food and table service I do feel Warner’s need to address the situation with the staff they appear to be mostly college students waiting to get off to university no direction from senior staff on how to care for people. I think the take over in January this year by Blackstone hedge fund has really brought Warner’s (Bourne Leisure) to its knees.
The couple we went with were deeply disappointed, however my husband and I did pre warn them that we had been to Sinah Warren a month ago and sad to say that it is on a par with Alvaston, so assuming going forward that all the hotels will now have dropped to very poor standards.
As stated we have been regular customers and always found the stays to be fantastic, we are dancers and enjoyed the opportunity to dance (Do you Warner dance) entertainment and food has always been first class. During the Covid-19 period we expect changes to keep everybody safe, however having spoken with several members of staff at different sites, Littlecote in June 20, Sinah Warren June 21 and now August 21 at Alvaston it seems the catering side of things is not going to change ie table service with very limited choice and no plans to reintroduce dancing (sequence and ballroom), we have another break already booked at Thoresby in November but sadly that will be our last. We can’t help but feel disappointed with the direction the group is going in, whether this is a result of the Blackstone finance institution involvement or not we can only guess at but we disagree with the corporate approach that is happening across the various sites, same menu everywhere, it was part of the attraction to sample he individuality of the hotels.
Finally, the drop in standards has not been reflected in the price as they have increased astronomically for a lesser product, can’t wait for the cruise companies to get back going to provide some much needed competition.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.

We’re so sorry to read that you feel so much disappointment with your break with us, especially in relation to your dining experience.

Prior to the hotel re-opening in May, we made many changes to our dining options, introducing a brand-new Market Kitchen restaurant menu, across all 14 hotels, plus two new restaurants at selected locations.

We appreciate that there have been some teething problems with this service, as Warner along with many other parts of the UK hospitality industry have experienced challenges in recruiting sufficient team to work in our bars and restaurants. We are working hard to recruit more team, but we are now making some short-term changes to our main restaurants. We also appreciate that with a number of new team that there may be a period of adjustment and we apologise if you felt your break was affected by this in any way.

The menu changes, team shortages and additional Covid-19 safe ways of working have made it challenging to deliver some of these new dining experiences. Supply issues and technology challenges have also added to the situation.

We want to reassure you that we're constantly listening to team and guest feedback and we appreciate your comments about this as well as your views relating to the comedian.

Once again we're very sorry that you felt disappointment on this occasion but we do hope to welcome you again in the future.

Regards,

Natalie

This was our first visit to a Warner hotel and will not be the last! Alvaston Hall was fantastic. The room was extremely comfortable and large. Lovely toiletries, spotlessly clean and supplied with plenty of tea and coffee. The food was varied and delicious. Special thanks to our waitress, Rihanna, who was extremely attentive, efficient and always so jolly.
Leisure facilities were great. I often had the pool to myself!
The entertainment on offer was so much better that I had expected. The shows were so professional. We especially enjoyed listening to Olivia Jayne, The Blackjacks and Duncan Heather. Comedian Terry Cotta was also hilarious.
This hotel was Covid secure and all of the staff worked so hard to give the guests a great time. Well done and thank you.

The room was excellent, as was the food and entertainment. Especially as they hadn't been open long after the Coronovirous restrictions.

Next time I will come with a friend as I was a little lonely by myself.

Room tip: I was in the house itself, which was handy for all the services, including The Sanctuary.
