We just needed a one-night stop-over while we attended a party nearby and were pleasantly surprised by how clean, tidy and well laid out the Gallows Guest House was. The owners completed the check-in procedure swiftly and in a friendly manner. Our room was spacious and, as with everything else, clean and tidy with ample tea and coffee provided in the room. The beds were comfortable and clean. Breakfast in the morning was very good - no frills or fancy stuff, just good, honest food served with a smile at clean and tidy tables.
Despite being at the front of the building and on the High Street our room was quiet - Fenstanton isn't TOO busy in any case but road traffic noise didn't impede our sleep.
Overall, a very nice guest house and one that we will certainly use again should we ever need accommodation in this area again.

Room tip: Room 5, upstairs and at the front but with dual aspect making it light and airy. Road traffic noise was never a problem.

Room 3.

1. Hand basin cracked badly and unhygienic.
2. Toilet pan cracked unhygienic.
3. The fan did not function in bathroom consequently the main room and windows became misted up and obviously causing damp in the bedroom.
4. No complimentary shampoo or shower wash. We did not know whether to expect any but in the bathroom were two plastic bottles of hair shampoo both used. Were they left by other guests?
5. Three lights not working. Centre bathroom light that kept flashing on and off and then stopped. A light above the bed on r/h side, loose on the wall and not working. Dressing room one bulb not working.
6. No bedside cabinets but then space was limited.
7. The cabinet that the tea making facilities were on was not large enough and the tray hanging over the edge.
8. The kettle lid kept flipping up very dangerous

After breakfast I talked to the lady servicing a room on the first floor and told her we were here for a funeral and needed to come back to the room at 12.30 to change etc she told me this would not be a problem and would ensure the room was serviced. We then left the Guest House and went to St Ives for the morning. On return the room had not been serviced so no tea, coffee or milk or towel change. We went down stairs and everything was closed up and we were alone in property. We assumed that perhaps she would be servicing the room in the afternoon. When I spoke to your manageress on Wednesday this week to obtain the email address, I told her about the non-service of the room and she told me the chamber maid had reported to her we were in the room at 12.30 and therefore she could not carry out her duties, this of course is not true.

You should also be aware that this guest house has no staff or owner living in! In an emergency you are on your own, which I found myself in. Frightening, didn't know the the address or postcode or phone number of the property when asked by emergency services. Never again would I stay in any establishment that does not have live in staff or owner.

I have emailed the owner twice and he has just ignored it I have spoken twice to who ever answers the phone who are always non-committal.
Therefore this is my review.

Room tip: Don't stay in room 3 faces on to main road and tired.

I found the Gallows online and reading the reviews thought I'd give it a try, upon arrival I was given my keys, and my breakfast order was taken, along with what time I would like it so it was cooked fresh and not reheated. My room was a small double, comfortable with a bed that you could sleep forever in, the bathroom was clean and warm, with a heated towel rail. I usually sleep with the windows open, but as the room looked onto the main road I didn't bother, despite this it was quiet, and not too hot or stuffy.
My full English breakfast was cooked to perfection, with lashings of toast and cereal as well if you wanted it.
All in all a lovely find, I've noticed some reviews moaning about the older model TV's, or the location, but at the end of the day, I paid £59 for a room with character and a really good breakfast. I will definitely return.

Stayed here overnight with my husband. The lady that runs the bed and breakfast wasn't there as she had had an operation so it was being run short-term by the owner's daughter who did a wonderful job. The rooms were clean, white sheets and towels, comfortable bed and pillows. Breakfast was very good, loads of it and hot, pre ordered the night before, saying what time you want breakfast and it is cooked to order. Breakfast room was very bright and fresh looking. We parked outside which was great and we didn't have a problem getting in and out of the car. There is parking just down the road. Very welcoming and would recommend.

The Gallows Guest House is a traditional B&B with en-suite facilities. The host (Sarah) is friendly and helpful and cooks a great breakfast, made fresh to order. Some guests were a little inconsiderate, banging doors early in the morning - there is quite a high turnover of people staying, as most seem to be overnighters passing through. The village has a couple of pubs, a baker's, a small Post Office, pharmacy, butcher's and convenience store, and a good bus service into St Ives in one direction and Cambridge in the other. There is also an excellent fish & chip shop nearby - I had the best haddock I had ever tasted for supper one night. Parking is not advisable outside the guest house as it is a busy through route on a slope; it is better to find a spot a little further down, where the road levels out.

Room tip: Length of stay a factor - I was allocated an upstairs double for sole occupancy because I was there for three nights.
