Brought our own snorkel gear, ignored the numerous people telling us we needed a tour as per all the tips we read and WOW.

We didn't see any sea turtles as we arrived around 11 am (I tried getting the group out the door forever!) So we just missed them however we saw so many fish, sea urchins and a sting ray which was in the very shallow water where people were walking around, we only saw it due to another couple pointing it out. Scary but so awesome to see.

Bring your under water camera and go earlier then we did!

We showed up in the afternoon, but was stopped by what looked like an official source, who told us that they were limiting snorkelers to the bay for ecological reasons. It was a total scam.
We showed up the next day and realized that there are no limits and you don't need to have a guide to 'find' the turtles. It is apparent where they are, just look for the groups of tourists huddled in the water.
That being said, the water is beautiful, the beach is too, and the snorkeling was a blast. We saw several turtles!

We were staying at the Bahia Principle a Tulum and decided to take a taxi to the nearby beach - cost 200mex . The beach is very busy with all the snorkelling done there. We paid for a couple of loungers and had an pleasant day. Plenty of shaded area to choose from .

Lovely private beach was connected to our hotel resort with many sun loungers and bars along the sea front.
