“Little piece of paradise”
Review of Sombrio Beach

Sombrio Beach
Reviewed 17 February 2017 via mobile

Such a great escape from civilization with surfers and great falls. I miss the old surf shacks back in the early days before it came a official park. Terrible drive and hike when wet but so worth the views. Nice private oasis for romance too.

We were warned by the people who ran the cabin that we stayed at to park at the highway, and hike in. We were greeted by a lot of potholes of varying sizes on a walk in! There is no wonder people warn others about this road!

It was about a 1.5 km hike from the highway to the forest entrance that leads to the beach. Through the forest, it took another 0.6km or so. When you reach a fork that gives you the option of going right or left, pick LEFT. We chose right at first, because the signs indicated it was shorter (we had a child with us). It led to a really cool suspension bridge over the Sombrio River, but after that, it was all mud and rocks that led nowhere.

We went back to the fork, and took left, which led to a much easier walk... and to the beach. There wasn't much if you're comparing it to fine sands and all, but this is the westcoast. I loved the sounds of the crashing waves. If you hiked a little further down the beach, you could reach a hidden water fall. The tides were coming in when we were there, so we opted out of that.

There were a lot of surfers. They had no problems scraping their cars along the potholes to get to the parking lot. I think they're used to it.

I think it's worth the mini hike and checking out!

Note: The road into this beach is HORRIBLE!!!! Park up top and walk in or be very very careful. Low cars will bottom out in places.
Great beach, lots of surfers. If you go to the left (facing the ocean) and walk for a little while you'll come to a little stream running into the ocean. If you follow the path in, you'll come to a very scenic waterfall. The trail is rough and in some spots you'll have to cross the creek.

Another beautiful day hike off the Juan De Fuca Trail. It's a short hike but enjoy some time exploring the beach area and make sure to visit the waterfall, it's stunning! Another amazing part of what makes Vancouver Island the best place in Canada!

Sombrio Beach is beautiful, and the waterfall is stunning. It's a surfers place, there's no sand on the beach, just softball sized stones and it's a little rough to walk on if you're mobility challenged. We were there when the water was high. The road is Pothole City. Not every car should try it - but OK with high suspension. It is a beautiful place to hang out with the surf!
