Well designed displays of the history of Wilmington and New Hanover County. Honest presentation of racial imbalances. Movie industry area is cramped and weak.

When looking at the pictures online I was a bit hesitant on this museum as it appeared a bit small, but wow was I pleasantly surprised at just how well packed this place was! Being near 30 and without kiddos, I was also a little hesitant in going as there appear to be many opportunities for young children on the weekend and let’s be real, when kids take over, it’s sometimes hard to get close enough to anything to really appreciate it, however, I found there was a nice balance for both kids and adults. I honestly had a lot of fun playing in some of the exhibits that offered hands on learning tools. A great place for both kids and adults! Also, rhe minature replications of Civil-War era Wilmington and Fort Fisher are top notch! There was so much to see and experience. Shout out to Susan who was behind the Native American replicas of tools. She was warm, receptive, and knowledgeable. The woman at the front desk today was also very friendly and helpful. The first Sunday of each month is complementary to locals and this was a great way to kick off my recent move to the area. I’ll be back!

I’ve been coming to this museum since I was a kid and now I get to watch my son enjoy it. Lots of hands on exhibits making it fun for all ages. They also offer a free program for kids 3-5 almost every Friday & Saturday. It’s definitely a local staple and a must visit for those just passing by Wilmington.

Cape Fear Museum covers the history and development of the Wilmington area. There are a lot of different types of displays and some of them allow you to interact with the information. The most interesting information that was new to me was about the White Supremacy movement in the late 1800's and how Wilmington had a violent overthrow of the local government. There is a large Discovery Zone area that is great for children and includes what it is like to be on the space station.
