They USED to be on 9th, but not any more. The cookies and pastries we had were terrific. There were a gazillion types of breads there. If I were local, the would become a go-to place.

Need a quick lunch for takeout or eat-in within downtown Durham NC? Ninth Street Bakery may be the place for you. Good sandwiches on bread baked on premises. Obviously, good bread that you can buy. You can see it being made on the spot. Area to eat inside plus large shaded outdoor area. Nice place to hang out and enjoy the downtown Durham vibe.

The bakery has a nice, small eating area where you can watch the bakers getting baked goods ready to deliver around the town. The cinnamon rolls and croissants were very good and they were complimented by the robust coffee. Interesting bar (like in someone's basement) had lots of unique beers on tap.

I was with a group when we decided upon the Ninth Street Bakery. While the baked scone was delicious it was a challenge to receive the Vegan Sandwich ordered for lunch. After 20 minutes of my table mates having their lunches I received the incorrect sandwich and had to go back up to the counter. Another 10 minutes passed before receiving the correct sandwich. The place was busy but not so packed to have incorrect items delivered. I would try again when there was not a lunch 'rush'!

this place has a normal kinds lunch menu during week for lunch. Sandwiches and salads always featuring their own bread and desserts. FYI -- this place used to be located on 9th Street in Durham but it relocated without changing its name awhile ago. On Saturday nights it has special ethnic menus. Yesterday's menu was Jewish food, meaning matzoh ball soup, brisket with beets and mashed potatoes, and chocolate babka bread pudding. The soup was OK,. A huge serving with lots of chicken in the broth, with 2 golf ball sized matzoh balls. This was too much of a heavy soup. I prefer a like chicken broth with light as air matzoh balls. I recognize that others may feel their version was just like Grandma made but for me it was too much soup with too heaving ingredients. The brisket was good and the pickled beets and potatoes freshly made. But there was no horseradish to be found anywhere. The bread pudding was to die for. The place opened at 5 and by 5:30 the brisket was sold out. There are no other places who even attempt "Jewish" food in town, except a few bagel bakeries, so all the people who remember Grandma's brisket must have come over for some take out. We have been here on other ethnic nights, like vegan Thai, and the food was less homey but more special from my point of view. All in all, their food is freshly made, the bread and pastries are really a treat but sometimes the ethnic nights may not be what you expect, although they may be what someone else expects. But then again I like my matzoh ball soup the best and they didn't have my recipe.
