The smoked salmon with avacado spread was delicious!!
Have eaten here many times, primarily from the breakfast menu even at lunchtime ( breakfast is served late). Potatoes are spicy, which I really like. Staff has always been nice and very helpful. Will be back.

great service; cafe and food as straightforward and simply done as befits a refectory... we shared dal as a starter and delighted in the savory complexity and heartiness of the dish. Mains (tuna, chicken marsala) were similarly done with care and attention to detail, with simple dishes beautifully prepared and presented.

We visited for Brunch after finding Fosters it’s usual overwhelmingly crowded self on a Weekend morning. This was a great treat! The food was fresh, environment relaxing, and staff super-friendly. The menu for Vegan/Vegetarian is hard to beat. Would highly recommend!

With so many options in Durham, it's easy to forget the Refectory Cafe. We ate there a few years ago and I thought it mainly a breakfast and lunch spot. Although we recently returned for Sunday brunch, we noticed the menu had dinner options as well. There is enough for vegetarians and vegans to enjoy but we went with two coffee drinks and omelets. Foodwise, my only complaint was that the crab in my omelet didn't have that fresh crab flavor. Otherwise portions were good and I like that their potato side item is like home fries with onions and peppers. The staff is pleasant, and even though the person ringing up our orders was new, she was apologizing as she was still learning. No problem. The style is fast casual, where you place your order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. They also had some nice-looking pastry items as well. We'll definitely need to try them for dinner sometime.

Delicious dinner with family to celebrate my mom's first visit to Durham. Quality ingredients and great taste, though a tad overpriced. Enjoyed the vegetarian and vegan options. Ambience is relaxed, fresh, and classy - nothing really like it in Durham.

Waitstaff was friendly, but there was redundancy in multiple staff asking the same questions and possibly not communicating well. Finally, I felt they were a little pushy about ordering dessert. Would definitely go back, but felt there were a couple things to improve on.
