So disappointing for a 5* hotel. Every meal service was very slow and lethargic; it took more than 2 hours plus each time. Most of the waiters did not know or could communicate to the kitchen for any improvements, it seemed they are not trained at all and the managers of the resort could not care one bit.

The food was so tasteless and bland each time. Not once did we have a decent meal. We did speak to the chef several times requesting on improvements, he did say he would but he did not at all, all those requests fell to deaf ears, despite the chef saying yes he will do it etc. Each time we had a meal it took more than two hours to serve us. A few examples are:

Risotto: Very bland, no taste what so ever.
Pasta: Dry, undercooked and again very bland and no taste what so ever.
Pizzas: Ordered 4, all came back completely raw at the bottom. In fact one pizza came after we had ordered desserts, shows the service standard after all.
They do not have any cocktails in the bars and do not even stock Gin. This is quite shocking for such a kind of hotel.
Vegetable Skewers: Came severely undercooked and very bland and no taste what so ever. The paneer they used in this was sour, undercooked and off and gave an upset stomach.
Breakfast: Can’t even get simple omelet orders right, mixed up all our orders.

Each time we asked the chef to do something to try and improve, he could not do anything, seems like they are not trained or know how to cook at all. We had to resort to going across to Peponi for meals a couple of times.

It was not only us complaining, when we went to Peponi we had guests who checked out of Majlis earlier and also had complaints of the food and service. We saw a few dinners leave early as they had not gotten their meal and some were sick from the food quality.
We had two meals at the Peponi restaurant and the service, food quality was a million times better and they seemed to have stock of everything.

My friends and stayed an another hotel across the bay and on our last night we decided to check out Majlis restaurant, also to see if maybe, perhaps we would opt for this resort the next time. I was pleasantly surprised by the completely different vibe in this resort. While Shella beach on Lamu island is lively and has a mediterranean feel, here at Manda island (a 3 min boat ride) the beaches are wider with beautiful white sand. It is luxury barefoot resort style. We were welcomed warmly and enjoyed a dawa sundowner at the terrace. This hotel is situated perfectly for sunset, and you can watch the dhow boats cruise by with a spectacular backdrop of red/orange light). The food in the restaurant was excellent as well. We had such a great time that the manager came out to warn us that it was time to take a boat back across the channel because of the tide. We were grateful for the warning, because we already had to wade half way through the mud to get to our watertaxi! All in all, a great experience.

On the night of New Years Eve my family, some friends and I had dinner at Majlis Hotel.A table of 10.From 11.00 onward the staff was removing away chairs and tables even when some guest personal belonging where still on those tables. In fact,a very shocked lady was running around, looking after her table where she had left here bag and succeeded to get it back only after an exhausting search.Seing that,we decided to leave the place and as soon we stood up,waiters grabbed our tables and run away with them.In the attempt to check if they was any of our thing left on the table I stopped the waiter and question him.At that moment, out of nowhere, the resident owner/runner,Mr.Stefano Moccia, violently punched me sending me on the floor where I badly hurt my head. The place was crowded and a number of poeples witnessed the fact and all confirm that I have been beaten by the owner!!!!

Got here on business for only one night - have been to Lamu before. With one afternoon to spare, I was aiming to make the most of it. The room is beautiful showing signs of sea wind ware and rare that gives it the Lamu feel. The balcony offered views that one recalls - right across from the Peponi hotel but far enough to not get the light boat traffic and hip factor of its terrace. Aside from the views, pool and pristine service, it is the PASTA that will keep you coming - without a doubt the best fresh pasta I have had in 3 years in Kenya. I indulged in the fresh crab tomato based sauce that was sublime and packed with flavors. While initially put off by the fact that it could not be served by the pool, the balcony provided the nice breeze that is required to cool down and have such a heavy meal under 30+degrees.

I stayed at the Majlis hotel for a little over a week for New Years holidays. It was a beautiful place on the beach front. It’s located on Manda Island.
We had a great time overall despite a few hiccups. When we arrived, our room was not available, so for the next two nights they put us in two different rooms so we kept moving around with all our luggage, not cool. At the end we got a room we were good with and onwards the stay was nice. They had lots of activities to do with most of them being free for residents. We went Kayaking and stand up paddling a lot which was nice to exercise and also get to see the mangroves (one of the routes-must do) it was purely breathtaking!
They have awesome cocktails at the bar and also an incredible location for sundowns.
