I took the "electric carriage" tour. There are many great picturesque views. The electric carriage was a GEM neighborhood electric vehicle that sits 6 (5 tourists plus the tour guide/driver). The ride is a little rough because this is a vehicle meant for smooth streats and not off-roading, but not too bad. The tour guide seemed knowledgeable, but a little stuck up. Complaining about the single radio antenna in the distaance ruining the view and noise from the bridge. Overall it is a great place to visit and take pictures.

Gorgeous welcoming historic Olana; a charming respite from the busy streets of Hudson. I am planning another longer visit. Darling accommodating staff such a special place!

I'm not really a fan of the Hudson River School of art, though there are individual paintings I like a lot. This house and the grounds around it however are like being inside one of the paintings and are fantastic examples of the expansion of art into the natural world. Decades of work are bringing the vision back closer to its source and I admire the way the State of New York is allowing that vision to shape development within view of the house. I highly recommend the carriage tour, even if you're an active walker, because it will take you to places you might otherwise miss, and the effect of the house and grounds is an amazing experience.

Why? Because here is the only interior where every item of furniture, every painting, every collectible in every room is EXACTLY preserved as shown in interior photographs taken when Hudson Valley artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) and his family lived in this romantic Persian style home.
Add the most superb landscapes, Hudson River overlook and intriguing family history, here is a must see Hudson area gem.

A remarkable property including grounds, with tour. My only reservation, possibly unjustified, is that one comes away with no appreciation of Church the artist. This tour focuses mostly upon the house - its history, construction, habitation, and ultimate restoration. There are some Church paintings inside, none major?, and they are uniformly poorly lit. I believe that this is from a desire to show the house in it's original state which is more often than not a dark, Persian-Victorian affair. Also, some tour time was devoted to a touring exhibit from South America, not really pertinent to why one visits Olana. But . . . we enjoyed the visit and would recommend it.
