Virginia City, as the centre of Nevada's silver mining in the Comstock Lode and thus one of the earliest important towns in the state, is home to one of the most historic and architecturally significant courthouses in the state. It is an ornate Italianate building of the late 1870s and unusually has a statute of Justice without a blindfold. It has a small museum display but is primarily a working courthouse and generally open only during regular weekday business hours. We were there on a weekend and got lucky since it was open for voting for a local election so we got to go inside.

It is one block up the hill from C St, the main street in town. It is on B St near Union St.

Very clever to house the exhibits in the old jail cells. Interesting information and items on display. We really, really enjoyed our time there!!!!! GO.

When we were visiting Virginia City, we went to the Storey County Courthouse. The original courthouse was lost to a fire in 1875 and was rebuilt in 1877. There is a free museum to learn more about history of the court house and area.

There is a free museum in the courthouse. It was the old jail. The museum is not expansive, but It gives the history of Virginia City. There is also a continuing video/slide show of the area's history, as well as current history. Some is about businesses that have sprung up in the area. We found a great coffee shop to visit from the video. It is one block up a steep hill from the main street. If late in the day or on weekends, you may find free parking in the courthouse lot. Only pay parking or pay lots are available on the main street.
