“Stunning Sunset Experience”
Review of Khongoryn Els

Khongoryn Els
Reviewed 30 July 2017

One of the most beautiful sites I have seen in all my travels. We arrived about 30 minutes to sunset, so time was of the essence. The climb to the highest peak is about a 1000 ft at about 45 degrees which made it the ultimate stair master. Our 20 minute effort to hastily climb to the summit paid off as we witnessed the most spectacular sunset over the endless parade of sand Dunes. Well worth it for anyone who loves a great sunset.

We had the chance to drive all around the Els and it felt like we were driving on a different planet. The vast open area and the animals roaming around made this place very special.

Khongor sand dunes are Mongolia's largest sand dunes located in the western Gobi and reaching height of 300 meters in some areas. The moving sand in the wind or when walked on gives out a definite note and makes a noise similar to an airplane passing by, that's why this particular part of the dunes is called "Singing" or "Sounding" would be more precise. We tried to reach the top of the dune but made it about 3/4 of the way. A few people made it all the way and slid back down. Bring water, wear a hat and long sleeve shirt to protect you from the intense sun. we were also able to ride a camel in this area.

The main activity is climbing the huge 300m dunes. Best done early evening, there are a number of routes, as you look at the dunes from the main starting point, the easier way is on the right. For some reason I did the hard route and it is lung busting; the main tips are take lots and lots of water and take your time. The top has amazing views on both sides and is well worth the effort.

You feel liberated and so small when you stood on this vast desert in the middle of nowhere. The weather can be very hot, so stay hydrated. The scenery is spectacular, you couldn't get more original than this.
There are herds and water wells along the way, you may take pictures.
Do go with a guide and an experienced driver, or else you would get lost.
The road and drive is bumpy but it's Mongolia, that's what it's supposed to be.
Be prepared, get sunblock, wear a hat, stay hydrated and enjoy your trip.
