Bear River Valley Recreation Area

The Bear must be the shortest river in Michigan. It begins in Walloon Village as the outflow from Walloon Lake and then makes a “U” turn and heads north through Petoskey into Little Traverse Bay........which is part of Lake Michigan. Entire distance.....less than 20 miles. During the summer, it is a great kayak run as the river has been pinched in with rock formations to create some interesting white water. There is also a wonderful walking path along side the Bear from Sheridan Road, down past the dam, to Lake Street. This is all complemented by a deep fishing hole below the dam as well as a lovely picnic are nearby. All that fun and it diesn’t cost a dime!

Nice walking and biking trails that take you from the marina south pass the spillway to the southern city limits. Great fishing from the bridge. One of the best white water kayak runs in the Mid-West.

No matter what time of year if you dress for the weather this is one of the most beautiful spots along Petoskey's Waterfront. There is both a paved (west side) and non-paved (east side) trail along the banks of the river. There are a total of three bridges between lake street and Sheridan street if you like crossing back in forth or are just looking for a place above the river to watch the water flow by which can be very relaxing. The rush in breakup season when the river is high is something to hear and see.
No matter what your purpose, you will not be disappointed when spending some time along this scenic river.

What I love most about this area is it is tucked into a busy commercial/residential area and yet, you can snow shoe, hike, visit and not even know the town is around you. The Bear River runs wild through the area and it is beautiful and full of scenic opportunites. A convenient area to get a hike in.

WOW - Just when I thought I couldn't be more in love with this little town - BAM - we stumble upon the Bear River. If anyone wants to buy our St. Pete Beach townhouse, give me a shout, 'cuz we're moving to Petoskey!
