“Another incarnation of Shiva”
Review of Bhairavnath Temple

Bhairavnath Temple
Reviewed 16 November 2017

This three roofed temple in Taumadhi Square sustained some damage during the 2015 earthquake, but remains virtually unscathed compared to so many of the temples in Bhaktapur and other sites in Nepal.

During my visit to the Temple, I learned that this Temple is dedicated to Bhairab, a fearsome manifestation of the Hindu deity, Shiva. This Temple has a great deal of ornate gilded arches and trim along with ornate wood window trim which features images of Hindu deities. Along with the Nyatapola Temple, it is a centerpiece of Taumadhi Square.

This temple although smaller plays a valuable part in the overall appreciation of Bhaktapur as a World Heritage site. As with the rest of the temples workmanship and equality are to the fore.

This is apparently the "male temple" in the square and does very much get overshadowed by it's much bigger next door neighbour. It is very beautiful in it's own right though and the carvings are very intricate.

The carving on the big stones were so living that it seems they would speak and walk around. I really enjoyed visiting this place. Recommended for the refreshments and sight seeing.
