“Dam of the people, by the people, for the people”
Review of The Grand Anicut (Kallanai) - CLOSED

The Grand Anicut (Kallanai)
Reviewed 25 August 2015

I always feel happy and proud whenever i visit this dam. My ancestors had a very good engineering knowledge 2000 years ago when they didn't have any modern technology. This dam is mainly constructed for the irrigation purpose, thus making the cauvery delta region rich in water content. Basically it is just another dam, but the history is what makes this dam more important than others. Visit here and feel the souls who gave us this dam.

This anicut which is called kallanai is about 20 kms towards thiruvaiyaru and onward to Kumbakonam. This is a must see place as from the national highway at trichy this location is only 20 kms. Those having time while travelling in the high way could stop and see this great marvel which is constructed from four sides and the reservoir was used to feed the farmers during the time when there was water scarcity.

This Canal was built by Great Karikalan Cholan around 1000 years before to irrigate the Tanjavur area. Water from Cavery was diverted to various canals.

Later during British Period, they had strengthed the Canal and this Qualifies as the Oldest Dam of South India which is used for Irrigation.

It is wonderful to see this Canal filled with Water.

Those who read the history of Grand Anicut will understand that the false crys of Mullaiperiyar dam.
