Had a wonderful, peaceful walk at Cedar Neck and the beach all to ourselves when we arrived there! Heard many birds through the changing vegetation and enjoyed the varied, beautiful rocks on the beach.

Getting there can be a challenge but follow the green signs that say sanctuary and you won't have too much of a problem--a 4WD vehicle isn't necessary but it might make you feel better; however, once you get there, there are multiple paths you can take depending on what you want and your endurance level, but regardless, you get up close with nature, a secluded beach and great views. All in all, an excellent stop for a good walk unspoiled!

A bunch of us decided to do this hike with our two dogs, a Boston Terrier and a Golden Retriever. The walk was pleasant and in no time we were on the beach, where we strolled a bit, then resumed the path, re-entering the circuit in a different spot. Following the white markers, we would have been back to the car in less than 20 minutes, but somewhere we went off course and discovered that we were on the orange trail, not even indicated on the map! Uphill we went, spanning rocks, hiking on very steep, narrow, rocky trails. It was challenging for us, and especially my goldie, who panicked when he came upon a four-step ladder that went over a rock wall. He refused to budge and had to be lifted up and over, the poor thing! We eventually realized where we'd gone wrong and retraced our steps (and redid the stone walls) to get back to the white trail. Over two hours of hiking made for a memorable experience! Actually, I'd do it again but I'm not so sure my dog would.

The only things that make this hike anything less than excellent are the ticks and the poison ivy. (The same can be said for pretty much every hike on Martha's Vineyard, so if you're hiking anywhere around there, just be vigilant and stay on the trail.) All that aside, this hike boasts one of the nicest beaches and sweetest views on the Vineyard. There is a bog on part of the trail, and it probably stinks sometimes, but we passed it before we realized we were in it, so I guess you can get lucky with that sometimes. The trails are fairly well marked and maintained. Do take care along the beach not to disturb the nesting terns. If you stay close to the waterline, you should be okay, and they seem to have fenced off the most active areas. The Headland Loop is worth going around for the great views of the sound and Elizabeth Islands. We also enjoyed visiting the painted turtle they have housed near the parking area. There is a porta-potty available in the parking lot, and be warned that it's a long dirt road that you'll be on to get there.

This slice of beach with rugged trails and cliff view of The Elizabeth Islands is a must. One of my three favorite dirt trails on MV. Maybe best in Fall
