It's hard to believe how few really good seafood restaurants are around in central Maryland. Most restaurants do serve seafood, especially crab cakes (not always done well), but few specialize. Hudson Coastal does, and they do an excellent job.

You will probably have your best experience mid-week, rather than the Saturday night we went that was made crazier by the Maple Lawn fireworks. The restaurants does not take reservations -- only call-ahead listings made within a half-hour of your expected arrival. I was skeptical, but we were seated within about 5-7 minutes of our arrival. Larger parties obviously waited longer. If you are seated in the bar area as we were, know that the metal chairs are charming but uncomfortable by the time you're finished your appetizers. In addition, this is a noisy restaurant. The owner stopped by several times (and was actively involved -- clearing tables, checking service, etc.), and we mentioned once that somewhere there's a talented interior designer who will specialize in acoustics for restaurants.

We ordered the fried clams for a shared appetizer. My friend ordered the crab cakes, adn I ordered the seafood platter with a crab cake, a cod filet, and grilled shrimp. Sides were French fries, a salad (substitute since my friend doesn't care for cooked spinach), the spinach, and sweet potato tater tots. I ordered a specialty cocktail with cucumber-infused vodka, lime, and soda.

The clams, crab cakes, and cod were winners. All fish comes fresh and local, or as local as possible, and is butchered on the premises, and shows and tastes it. The clams were tasty (breaded but not overwhelmed) and had the right texture. The crab cakes were seasoned perfectly and have minimal filler. The cod was done perfectly. The spinach was terrific, as were the tater tots and fries.

Two items gave this a ranking of 4 instead of 5. The shrimp were done 2 to a wooded skewer, and were overcooked, making them difficult to get off the skewer and making them tough. The cocktail had not been mixed thoroughly. I don't use straws, so my first tastes were pretty astringent.Only when I finally used a straw to get to the last portion through the ice did I taste the sweetness that should have been throughout the drink from the beginning.

Will we go back? Absolutely!

This was me and my husband’s first time to Hudson Coastal Raw Bar and Grill. It’s located in a great community called Maple Lawn, located in Howard County, which is situated between Baltimore and D.C. The atmosphere is very lively and friendly, as is the staff. You couldn’t ask for better customer service. The owner, Brad Hudson cane to our table and chatted with my husband and I for a bit. Rick, his manager, was very attentive and personable. Our server waited patiently while we finished our chat to take our orders. My husband ordered wine, and I ordered my usual sparking water. Bite size, sweet biscuits, along with honey butter were brought to our table. Although a little tuff, they were dang good. I could have made a meal out them. My husband ordered the quinoa salmon salad, which looked appetizing, even if I’m not a salmon lover. I asked our server about the seafood burger...shrimp, cod, haddock. She stated they put ritz crackers in them. That should have been my first warning...there is nothing worse when the binder overpowers the main seafood ingredient. The burger was highlighted on the menu, as a popular item so I decided to order, in spite of. I should have heeded the warning. When it arrived, It looked appetizing! It was served on a soft brioche bun, with lettuce, a tomato and remoulade sauce...so far so good; However, when I bit into it, it was very hot and the texture was of mushy bread...I sent it back. I was asked if I’d like to order something else. I was going to order the crab cake, but I figured I”d get more bread than crab, so I went with the veggie burger. Another big disappointment. Hudson loves breading their food. A cost savings perhaps? Veggie burgers are suppose to look land taste like burgers, with no meat. This was breaded, with a chunk of squash, here and there that had no flavor. I had to use the remoulade sauce to make it tasty. It’s funny, as I was talking to Brad I commented how running a restaurant is a hard business. He disagreed. I said a great chef and consistency is a must. Again, he didn’t agree. We’ll see! I wish him the best. Would I go back? Nope...their food does not fit my palate. There is nothing worse than leaving a restaurant hungry.

Been to this place twice now and the food was great both times. Fresh seafood on the menu with plenty of other options too. The DelMarVa chicken and crab cakes are both at the top of the list. Their seafood risotto is also very good and they cook the rice perfectly. Very cool and beachy atmosphere/coloring inside. Make sure to stop in if you're in the area!

A seafood restaurant in MD - with lots of great seafood choices here in this state!- that has fresh and delicious seafood and very good service is wonderful. The personal service from the owner, Brad, as well as the manager, hostesses and the servers is excellent. If you like very fresh oysters and fish, this is the place for you! Skip the pasta dishes and go straight for the fish and oysters of the day😊

I'm really surprised by the number of great reviews about their food. We stopped here one evening after visiting D.C. all day. We were hungry and ready to chow down. I will say that it's very kid friendly and clean. Other than those two things, unfortunately, there isn't much a whole lot left to say. My Rockefeller oysters were a no no no no, our server had a very nonchalant attitude as our apps were coming out very slowly, the food was sooooo basic. I'm pretty sure you can find something more fulfilling nearby.
