We decided on the spur of the moment to go to Cumberland and do some biking on the C&O Canal Towpath. The Cumberland Inn & Spa had availability with only two nights notice. When we got there, we did not see any other renters, although we arrived early. Even later there was only one other room rented, as far as we could tell. That is odd, because it is a lovely, clean, reasonable guest house. Taylor, our hostess, told us that summer was her busiest season, but it was really, really quiet in this elegant house. It was a joy to stay there, because we felt like we owned the place. There is a lovely lounge with coffee, snacks, hot and cold water and very comfy sofas and chairs. There is even a chess game set up. Taylor was very accommodating, but the reflexology masseuse couldn't make it on such short notice for Saturday evening. Other than that, we loved this place. Bikes were kept outside in the garage.

Room Tip: All rooms have private baths, some down the hallway. Rt 68 noise not a problem.

The Inn is not too far off of the GAP trail, but the streets are kind of busy getting there. It is close enough to downtown that one can walk to dinner. There is decent, covered bike storage. The shortcoming would be cleanliness. For a spa the carpeting was pretty dirty.
For us, check in and check out was simple.

Room Tip: The street side is noisy in the morning.

Recently visited Cumberland and chose to stay at the Cumberland Inn. We might well have been the only people there, it was so quiet. The room was charmingly small but clean and very comfortable. We also enjoyed curling up in the lounge late at night for conversation and some of the wine we had purchased at the local winery (Charis - don't miss it). And the room rate was more than reasonable, comparable even to a mid rate chain hotel.

Everyone in Cumberland was as friendly as could be, and we found quite a number of places to spend money. They seem to be working towards making it a getaway destination, and there were several shops an restaurants we enjoyed, and the prices weren't bad either. At first glance the town seems pretty sleepy, but we passed several hours there with no problem. I think with some well chosen additions (a yarn store, hiking/fishing retailer, etc.) together with the lovely scenery and friendly people, it would be a fun day/weekend trip to take the train up and do some hiking as well as shopping.

We did some walking along the Potomac and enjoyed talking to people about the local history. Although we did not stay long enough to enjoy the train tour, it sounded like a fun idea and we may come back when things start greening up. We only just missed the fall foliage, and I understand they do a Christmas train tour as well.

Room Tip: The inn is historic, so there are stairs, no elevator. Ask for lower level room if this is an issue.

No one was at the place when we arrived....note was left to call and had to wait nearly a half hour for them to return. Had scheduled spa services for daughter and I. During my last visit here the massage was one of the best ever, this trip not so much.... average at best

Went to Cumberland Maryland for a concert in the town. We were in walking distance of downtown. Very nice room. Got lost getting there. Called the Inn and the young lady was very helpful and even stood out front to look for us. Has a sitting room and even a small kitchen room with a fridge for food. Would stay again if in the area.

Room Tip: We had the room with the bathroom in the room.
