We were forced to book a place quickly because our previous plans fell through (snow closed the roads in Austria!). When we spotted B&B Casa della Fornace on Trip Advisor, we thought we’d take a chance. We knew nothing of the area but it was on the way to our next planned stop, Venice. What a serendipitous experience this turned out to be! Eleonora and Alessandro, our hosts, were so charming. We know only a few words in Italian but they valiantly spoke to us in English…quite appreciated by us. They have been lovingly restoring this B&B for over ten years (they have some amazing pictures documenting the transformation) and their love of this place is palpable. The rooms, including the public rooms, are beautifully decorated. Someone has a very artistic eye and excellent taste! Our room was huge, including a large bathroom with a wonderful shower/sauna. The view of fields was so peaceful and relaxing. Yes, San Vito al Torre is a remote little spot, but well worth the drive. In an effort to find a place for dinner, we drove to Palmanova (a fascinating town in its own right, but that’s a whole other story). As luck would have it, there was a festival going which included flag throwing (have you ever seen Under the Tuscan Sun?). How lucky for us! Anyway, I digress. Breakfast at Casa della Fornace was delicious. It included prosciutto, cheeses, orange juice, and a special cake indigenous to the area (according to Eleonora). During breakfast the hosts told us about interesting places in their area. They even pulled out some books to tell us more of the history of the area. Clearly they have a love of their home, their area, their culture. How lucky for us that they were so willing to share this love with us. We were made to feel so comfortable and had a thoroughly enjoyable visit. All this for only 60 Euros a night. What a fantastic deal! Thank you, Eleonora and Alessandro!More
