It is beautiful there. I went for a high tea with some friends. Staff were very helpful. The setting was good and the scenery was stunning. The scones were very stale and the cream was mixed with buttermilk, so wasn't proper Devonshire cream. That was very disappointing.

Good evening Julia H,

I am very sorry that you didn't enjoy your cream tea with us. I wish you would have mentioned that you were disappointed to one of our team as we would have happily replaced this for you or offered you something to restore your faith in us. We will always try our hardest to make sure all of our guests leave happy.

I must mention that we do not have any buttermilk in the building so it certainly wasn't the case that this was mixed in, we use a local dairy, who send us a slightly less firm clotted cream than what you receive from main brands such as Rodda.

I hope that you will give us another chance in the future.

Kind regards,

Kim & The Moorland Hotel Team

We arrived at the hotel at lunch time Friday and enjoyed a lovely lunch before checking into our dog friendly room which we were extremely pleased with it was very clean, comfortable and modern.
We also had a evening meal in the bar area which was great and reasonably priced,
Breakfast in the conservatory between 7.30 and 10 with lots of choices and cooked to order,
The staff were all excellent friendly and very chatty and polite all in all a great stay and yes we will definitely be back.

We spent a couple of days here on their fan Feb offer. We had such a good time and what we got for what we paid was really good value. All staff were friendly and the food was amazing. Our room was amazing and can't recommend this place highly enough, will definitely be back.

Booked with Claudia who was very helpful and friendly, and on arrival she greeted us and welcomed us and showed us through the hotel to reception. Our room was great beautiful view of the grounds all covered in snow which was a bonus and great extratouches a bottle of fresh milk in our fridge and some petit fours for us in the evening. We were also welcomed to the louge for a pot of tea and warm cookies, a nice touch.
Our dinner was superb beautiful food and great service from our waiter and waitress where nothing was too much trouble..We retired for a cooee and petit fours and later to our room for another coffee and more petit fours in our fridge. Breakfast was great great food and we enjoyed our stay very much and hope to return again soon with friends to enjoy the experience. We would certainly recommend to friends and return again soon.

Room tip: rooms over looking the garden are very pretty, but in the other direction looking over the car park is a view of Haytor

Just spent two nights at the Moorland celebrating my Wife's 83rd Birthday.
Room 5 was lovely, clean, comfortable and well appointed.
The food was excellent and the staff attentive and helpful.
Regrettably we were disappointed with the hotel in general.
The restaurant is more a Bistro than a proper restaurant. The bar area, for comfort, is small - just two tables and eight chairs.
We took our pre-Dinner drink in the Lounge, cluttered with soft chairs and lacking in ambiance. Modernisation a bit too far for our liking.
This of course is our perception of the hotel and is not meant to be a criticism because it is obvious from the many previous excellent reviews that overall it is well appreciated. But we could not recommend it to our friends

Dear Shirpet,

Thank you for all your lovely points within your review and we thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Albeit, we feel it necessary to defend ourselves against your opinions on our hotel facilities and atmosphere.

We assume from the room you describe and that you talk of eating in our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie that you were accompanied by a dog during your stay. We are fortunate that our hotel, one of very few locally that boasts two fantastic restaurants, both with different menus and characteristics. Our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie seats up to 80 in its bar and seating areas and therefore boasts a large but cosy country feel. Our Conservatory Restaurant oozes in natural light, with views of our beautiful gardens and the moors boasting a classy ambiance serving a 6 course set menu each evening. We don't know many hotels that allow dogs within its main restaurant, however we therefore have our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie that allows those dinning with dogs to do so within our alternative restaurant.

We do operate a 'any menu, anywhere' policy and therefore should you have wished for our
Conservatory menu in the Tinpickle this would not have been a problem at all.

Here at The Moorland Hotel we have 36 newly bedrooms and therefore must provide seating with our lounge and restaurants to comfortably accommodate all of our guests when we are at the hotels capacity.

We have recently just undergone a total refurbishment, in fact the first since 1960 and as are many very impressed with the hotels beauty and improvements, of course we know that our tastes wont be to everyone's but would like to thank you for your kind comments on cleanliness, service, efficiency and comfort.

Kind regards,

Steve Furness
