Just spent two nights at the Moorland celebrating my Wife's 83rd Birthday.
Room 5 was lovely, clean, comfortable and well appointed.
The food was excellent and the staff attentive and helpful.
Regrettably we were disappointed with the hotel in general.
The restaurant is more a Bistro than a proper restaurant. The bar area, for comfort, is small - just two tables and eight chairs.
We took our pre-Dinner drink in the Lounge, cluttered with soft chairs and lacking in ambiance. Modernisation a bit too far for our liking.
This of course is our perception of the hotel and is not meant to be a criticism because it is obvious from the many previous excellent reviews that overall it is well appreciated. But we could not recommend it to our friends

Dear Shirpet,

Thank you for all your lovely points within your review and we thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Albeit, we feel it necessary to defend ourselves against your opinions on our hotel facilities and atmosphere.

We assume from the room you describe and that you talk of eating in our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie that you were accompanied by a dog during your stay. We are fortunate that our hotel, one of very few locally that boasts two fantastic restaurants, both with different menus and characteristics. Our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie seats up to 80 in its bar and seating areas and therefore boasts a large but cosy country feel. Our Conservatory Restaurant oozes in natural light, with views of our beautiful gardens and the moors boasting a classy ambiance serving a 6 course set menu each evening. We don't know many hotels that allow dogs within its main restaurant, however we therefore have our Tinpickle & Rhum Brasserie that allows those dinning with dogs to do so within our alternative restaurant.

We do operate a 'any menu, anywhere' policy and therefore should you have wished for our
Conservatory menu in the Tinpickle this would not have been a problem at all.

Here at The Moorland Hotel we have 36 newly bedrooms and therefore must provide seating with our lounge and restaurants to comfortably accommodate all of our guests when we are at the hotels capacity.

We have recently just undergone a total refurbishment, in fact the first since 1960 and as are many very impressed with the hotels beauty and improvements, of course we know that our tastes wont be to everyone's but would like to thank you for your kind comments on cleanliness, service, efficiency and comfort.

Kind regards,

Steve Furness

Stayed here feb 2019. Lovely room, staff very helpful and nice relaxed atmosphere. Everything clean and hotel is newly refurbished. Have already stayed here once before and will stay again. They have started to cater for coaches so will have to be careful they don’t run out of things on the menu as was the case on this occasion.

Only living 8miles from Haytor we’ve driven past the Moorland on many occasions taking the dog for a walk but had never been in until now. We were treated at Christmas to a voucher to stay here and we thought no better time than Valentines. We booked up including our dog, they have 5 pet friendly rooms(you wouldn’t think so, v.plush & lovely big bed with quality linens) that have patio doors straight out onto a terrace with loads of grass in front, this came in handy at 4am this morning. We arrived for lunch at their Brasserie Tin Pickle and Rhum, lovely wood interior, log burner and great food which will satisfy a healthy appetite and excellent attentive staff. Only one thing to do was walk it off before dinner and with Haytor and beyond out the front door it is perfect. After 5miles we deserved a drink on the south facing terrace and with the wall to wall sunshine it was perfect. We decided to have the dog with us for Dinner so went back to the Brasserie and were offered the restaurant a’ la carte menu and the regular, offering loads of choice for very reasonable prices and with the lovely touch of fresh roses for all guests on Valentines. After a sumptuous quiet night sleep(accept for the dog) back for more food, Quality ingredients where on offer across the breakfast menu......let’s just say we needed to explore a lot moor of the moor today after our consumption in the last 24hrs.

Highly Recommend, whether that for a week, weekend or just a night once you’ve tried you’ll be sure to return as we will⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A note of thanks to all at this wonderful hotel that made a special celebration such a memorable weekend. A superb venue for an event or a peaceful retreat. The recent tasteful refurbish compliments this lovely building.

We stayed at The Belgrade Sands hotel in Torquay for 3 days followed by a 2 night break here. The hotel is set in a spectacular location affording views of Dartmoor National Park. We had the James Bond suite (007) and couldn't have been happier with it. This is a hotel where you can do as much or as little as you wish. This could be walking the nearby moors or simply relaxing in the comfortable lounge. We were well looked after by Stuart and his team but a particular mention has to go to Olivia who looked after us so well in the restaurant who was oozing with charm and enthusiasm and is a real asset to this establishment.

Dear PhilB505,

Thank you ever so much for such a lovely and detailed review.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your room, 007 happens to be one of my favourites too! I shall certainly pass your kind comments onto our owner whom I am sure will be thrilled to hear them, likewise I shall inform Olivia. Our team are very new and still in the bonding phase, we're very lucky to have such good members of staff to lead the way for all our team.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us and we very much hope you will return soon.

Kindest regards,

Stuart and all the team at The Moorland Hotel
