Read about the Taravao Plateau on Fodor's website, and it was worth the drive. It wasn't hard to find the road from down by the big Carrefours in Taravao, but the road goes up and up for a long way, and stretches of it are pretty washed-out and bumpy. We did it in our little rental car, but it took some negotiating. Close to the end of the road is the Taravao Belvedere, a gazebo with a sign and a beautiful view down on the isthmus and Tahiti Nui. A short ways further the road ends at a reservoir, and there is a path up to a high point looking down west towards the isthmus. There is another trail that runs east, but we didn't have time to explore that. Bring a picnic lunch, it's a quiet, out-of-the-way spot to see a different side of Tahiti.
