My favorite local Italian restaurant over last 35 yrs has recently closed. Was looking for something close by with good grub & not too fancy. And where a plate of pasta wasnt $25! After checking out the local "in places" in northern PB County, I remembered the old stand by Costellos in downtown Abacoa. One of the few places still going strong in the Abacoa/ballpark area. Checked it out on a Friday night & was pleasantly surprised. Not too crowded at 530pm & easy parking a few spots down form the property. We had a party of four & started with calamari. Was pretty good. Nice & tender with an ok sauce. Wanted to try it roasted but was overruled. I also had a cup of soup which was also spot on. I chose the chicken parm, with penne. The cut was great, Just a bit overdone on the edges where Im guessing the oil may have been a bit too hot. Crusty all around & had to trim off edges. Penne was done just right. Sauce a bit above standard fare. The rest of my group had two pizzas which were great. A few garlic rolls or plain rolls came with the meal, as did soup or salad. Once bread was gone you had to order & pay for a side order if you wanted more for the meal. Not the Italian custom, or to my liking, but when in Rome.... My house salad was so-so. Next time id go with the Caesar. All in all a pretty good meal with some fresh pasta that wont break your wallet. Speaking of wallet, CASH ONLY, another slight bummer that topped off a pretty good meal. Will be back -
