I had breakfast menu in Walnut Cafe and it turned out to be a great experience. I really liked their tasty strong coffee. Breakfast menu included more traditional and modern options. I decided to go with oatmeal and fresh berries. Busy place, which is easy to understand. The surroundings are not the greatest.

The Walnut Cafe serves home-style Boulder food. For example, on of my favorite sandwiches is the Heart Melt with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, tomatoes, olives (I substitute green chillis) and swiss cheese all melted on rye. Unique and tasty describes many of the menu items. And they have a soup or two every day, a daily quiche, and several types of unique desert pie slices. The food at this mid-Boulder location on Walnut Street off 30th Street is very much like the food at the south Boulder location near Table Mesa and Broadway. The difference is the size and ambiance of the places. The mid-Boulder location is smaller and has more charm and is better for conversations, though you might have to wait to get a table at lunch hour. The south Boulder location is larger, has high ceilings, is a bit louder and darker, but we've never had much of a wait at that location. The only problem with the Walnut Cafe is that it is not open for dinner!

The Walnut Cafe South in Table Mesa on South Broadway is equally good as the original on Walnut and just as busy. I had the Mexican omelet and the salsa was nice and picante. My companion had the half portion of huevos rancheros and liked it very much, too. Our meals came quickly, the staff was friendly, and the place clean. I always get a biscuit to take home. It is almost like a piece of cake, it is so large and fluffy (but not sweet). You can eat indoors or outside at tables set up that have a fine view of the Front Range and Devil's Thumb. Remember, this is a cafe, not fine dining, but fine for lunch or breakfast. Portions are good, though not overly generous, and you get 2 sides with most meals. Only thing I don't like is that the hot tea is served in a glass. I prefer a cup and a pot. It takes forever for it to cool enough to drink.

A good range of brunch options with some interesting variations on the standard fare. Portions are good and service generally efficient even though it always seems busy.
