We discovered Cantiga quite by accident about five years ago while driving through the Sierra Nevada foothills looking for new wineries in the Fair Play Area. A faded sign points to it about 500 feet off the main road. Their wine was a revelation. It was wine I remember from 45 years ago when I began tasting and studying wine. It was wine true to its varietal character in taste, smell and color. I had forgotten that cabernet sauvignon was a clear, bright red, and not black, tar-like, and opaque opaque. I had forgotten that well-made chardonnays could be put down and aged for many years. The beautiul red-purple zinfandels of the past were now before me instead of something adulterated with malolactic fermentation and inky blending wines to give it "color." Winemakers Rich and Christine Riordan are true believers in these ancient winemaking practices and are usually in the tasting room to share their enthusiasm. Their wines are joyful throwbacks to the days when California wines could go to France and compete and win.

Rich and Christine are always awesome hosts. They are extremely passionate about wine and their wine making process. You will learn a great deal about not using malolactic fermentation in the wine process but more importantly you will love the food and wine pairing that will lead you and introduce you to their fabulous wines. I always leave with a few more bottles to add to my collection. Enjoy and savor.
