We went there yesterday for lunch. Based on a recommendation we asked the waiter to order for us. He asked us a couple of questions as to things we didn't like and commented, "so nothing weird, right!". We said correct and off he went to order our lunch. I have to say he did a fantastic job, lunch was excellent. It was probably a little pricier than if we had ordered ourselves, but it was definitely worth it!! We will be back for sure!!

Shopping for golf stuff next door at Pete Carlson's- stopped for lunch. The Manager saw us gamely trying to make an order and offered his best suggestions which were spot on. As other regular couples also came in he knew what they wanted and placed orders for them before they even sat down- that takes experience and confidence, and regular customers to keep coming back.
Took a dark booth. The Special tuna tataki was sublimely savory."Don't add wasabi, just stir-stir-It gets better if you stir-stir" the crunchy shrimp and yellow dragon rolls were superb.

This Japanese restaurant has been here for years. It is busy and has good food. Service is good. The menu is typical Japanese fare and various sushi are available.

Before moving to the desert, I spent my entire life in westside LA, near "Little Osaka" and in San Jose right in the middle of their almost century old Japantown. And I have been to Japan. So I know Japanese food - the exalted to the every day, the regional to the specialized.
So- no - Matsuri does not compare to a big city omakase or Jiro sushi. But we are so fortunate to have a honest, delicious Mom and Pop (in this case I think it's Mom and Son) home style Japanese restaurant in the Coachella valley. The sushi is definitely the best affordable sushi in the area. Freshly made and not too gimmicky, with excellent quality ingredients for the price.
As for the regular menu, it really is exceptional.Several home-style dishes are impossible to find elsewhere in the desert, and most others are the best versions around. Definitely the best tempura in the desert. Yes, many of the combo meals include an iceberg lettuce salad with miso dressing, but that is a long standing tradition for family style Japanese restaurants in Hawaii and California.
Service can seem efficient but reserved to first timers. But come back a few times and you will see how warm - and funny - the family that runs the place can be.
