Let me preface this review by stating that I understand the concept that “One must sell peanuts when the circus is in town”. We were in town for Monterey’s Car Week & had stayed in this neighborhood on 2 previous visits. We chose the Munras Inn largely based in the room photos posted on the internet. To be clear, the rooms are spacious & well -appointed with good beds, good lighting & a so-so modern bathroom. TV remote does not work correctly.
When you pull up to this place, the first impression is not good. It looks like a combination 1960’s roadside motel coupled with Motel 6 architecture. The lobby (see pictures) is a total disgrace & had it not been for our deposit and the other nearby hotels being booked, we would have walked out. Depressing & disappointing to say the least. The guy behind the desk was almost pleasant. We knew this was going to be a little expensive when we booked it, but the way rates varied night-by-night during our stay was shocking. Yes, I know, it was our fault when we booked this beauty. That said, the Inn’s website talked about breakfast being included. It was indeed. The breakfast was packets of dry cereal, horrible cold coffee, passable mini containers of yogurt, fat laden prepackaged muffins that weighed a ton & the “piece de resistance”--- a tray to bring this crap up to your room where you can eat in on your bed. One saving grace was the Keurig machine in the bar/refrigerator.
The room overlooked the parking lot where you could hear the cars coming & going. Outside lighting so bright you need a welder’s mask at night to protect your eyes. The traffic noise from the nearby city street did not help the ambiance. Would I stay here again? Never!! The word “courtesy” is not in the vocabulary that was taught to the people behind the reception desk. Their attitude was “If you don’t like it, leave”. OK. My suggestion to future guests is to be prepared to be shocked upon entering this dump. Spend as little time in this place as possible. Leave early & come back late.
