Need significant effort to reach this resort ! I flew from Surabaya to Tarakan via Balikpapan and then continue my journey with Speedboat. I took me almost 11 hours to reach this spot.

Don't expect to much on this island...actually you need to do Island hoping to the other small islands surrounding Derawan to found those fantastic beaches and snorkeling spots. Kakaban island and Sangalaki island was fantastic !!!

Hotel rooms was quite okay, the hot water was also running well...however all the wooden furniture has insect holes all over the place. Definitely need total maintenance...

The hotel was big and has several room on the water, the beach and the surrounding was also reasonable clean. Unfortunately, the cleaniness in the room need more attention especially the bathroom and toilet. The shower and the seat toilet in the room that I stayed needed to be fixed. The food was nice, but the breakfast started at 7 am (too late for visitors who want to explore the island in the early morning). The restaurant does not serve food all the time, so be prepared.

Just come back from a great vacation in Derawan Dive Resort (DDR). We stay 3 nights in Derawan Dive Resort for Scuba diving. The best services have been provided from the booking period. We contact several times with the resort to arrange our booking smoothly since it is our first time coming to this area, and they have been helping us from th beginning until the end of the trip. One of our flight is cancelled, so they help us arrange boat transport from DDR to Tarakan, where we have to catch another flight. During the stay, the diving crews are great with their services and their concern about safety in every single dive we do. Staffs at the resort are very friendly, and we get lots of food in every meal we buy with them. Although the room may be not be so new, it is comfortable, it comes with all necesary things we need. This trip is very impressive because we get to see what we want to see underwater guided by Derawan Dive Team. We will be back again soon.

Room Tip: If you want to enjoy staying mostly in the room, the VIP room above water would be good.

I paid a little bit more to stay here compared to the many over-cottages because it was easy to book from overseas. The room was clean but needed a little paint to cover up water leak marks. The bathroom was clean enough but showed signs of poor workmanship and/or need for maintenance (cracked tiles, broken shower fittings). All tolerable.

Breakfast was a choice of greasy fried rice and noodles usually, with banana fritters often too. It is very much a local resort.

They change the sheets daily which is an extravagance for a place that's so remote. They should probably conserve in this respect for the environment and put the money into other things like maintenance or some fruit for breakfast.

My husband and I stayed here in March 2016. We arrived on Monday and the hotel was almost empty as all the local people stay for a weekend mostly. We chose a standard room, it was ok, we had hot water (which not always happens on small islands) and air conditioner. The food, frankly speaking, could be better, but we are not gourmands, so it will do for a couple of days. The main advantage of staying at Derawan Dive Resort is nature, it resembles Maldives a lot. The sea is amazing, it's clean and deep enough, that is there are places where you can swim during the low tide.
