I stayed at Tierra Chiloé with my husband and 3 kids of 12, 10 and 8 years old. We stayed for 4 nights (a good amount of time) and had a perfect stay.
The hotel is beautifully designed, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the staff coudn’t be friendlier.
The excursions were really fun, out favorite was the boat ride with a stop for kayaking. Our guide Magi had a vast knowledge of the nature surroundings and gave us extensive explanations about the places we were visiting.
The horseback riding was also super fun, and the company of our guide’s dog Gaucho was the cherry on top!
I strongly recommend visiting Tierra Chiloé if you like being surrounded by Nature and the amazing landscapes of Chile

I have found over the years that vacation means different things for different people. Your typical vision – a calm beach, umbrellas, hammocks, a Corona with a lime firmly rooted. This indeed is a vacation for many. Others are jumping from a plane, scaling a rock, or bursting through a rain-forest canopy like a mad bird. The beauty of a vacation is just that – to each his/her own.

I personally seek an experience. But more than that, something that will generate memories. I don’t necessarily need to relax, but I want to come away from said vacation feeling an absolute need to tell everyone I know just how special it was and relive the experience with those whom I shared it with. I achieved just that with a recent trip to Tierra Chiloe.

We were two adults and three kids (ages 6, 13 and 15). We were a bit concerned about the kids – would they bother the other guests, they can get a bit rowdy, etc. Upon our arrival Andres and Teresa along with their staff greeted us at the door and their warmth with the kids put us at ease immediately. The youngest, Michael, was immediately fascinated with the inner-workings of the hotel.

“Who sits here?”
“What does that guy do over there?”
“If he gets thirsty, what does he drink?”
“Where do you sleep?”

The questions were endless, and Andres and Teresa fielded them like seasoned veterans. We were then whisked away to plan our excursions for the week. The variety of options was impressive – hikes, boat outings, horseback riding, or just plain relaxing. Maria Jose guided us through the options and we were set.

Over the subsequent four days Tierra Chiloe showed us just how special this tiny array of islands in the south of Chile is. Again, an experience is what we sought. And it is exactly what we found. Some days were jam-packed with adventure, while others allowed you to reflect on the life that people carve out for themselves on the island. It is so different from that of your own life that you find yourself nearly 100 percent immersed in thought during every waking hour.

Perhaps the greatest take-away from this experience is we as a family grew tighter. We shared so much together in such a distinct environment, and those memories are firmly cemented – entrenched for eternity. That’s what I want in a vacation. And it’s what I achieved at Tierra Chiloe.

This hotel is magical-- amazing staff, delicious food and a truly gorgeous setting! Chiloe is often overlooked on itineraries but we think it is a very special place. We asked the hotel to organize a Curanto which was Chilean version of a clambake and was so much fun! We had music and the weather was sunny with incredible views. The hiking and horseback riding are not to be missed and do try some of their pisco sours.

Do visit Castro, have lunch overlooking the water and visit some of the wooden Churches.

Every so often you come across a hotel that deserves to be outed for being everything you wanted in a hotel. Tierra Chiloe is such a hotel:

A Design: this hotel is pure unadulterated James Bond-chic; think Quantum of Solace, hotel in desert out of this world spacey design and interior finish (unusually the professional pictures you see on the internet barely do the place justice), and at 24 rooms big enough to not be claustrophobic but small enough to be intimate and friendly (the right size to engage or detach from others as you see fit), ecologically friendly and sustainable,

A Location: expansive views from EVERY room and all the public areas of the hotel with massive windows – set in a secluded and picturesque bit of countryside on the shores of Chiloe Island,

A Kitchen: that produces tasteful, balanced, fresh, locally sourced and varied food – every meal – nothing boring, nothing pretentious, nothing executed badly; it all worked, from breakfast (with the very special scrambled eggs and sensational fresh orange juice), to the copious fresh salmon and an onion tart that unpretentiously stole the show one lunch, as well as the select but oh so tasty craft beers and Chilean wine cellar (there was no skimping on the quality for wines that were offered) and that subtly sublime honey in their pisco sour,

A Destination: that is unspoilt, friendly, interesting and beautiful, namely the community, people and island of Chiloe, Chile.

And most of all…

A Team: (including many local islanders) who are fresh, professional, thoughtful, keen and hard working, at every stage of your experience, and I mean everyone, from the transfer driver, to the reception team, the food servers, the kitchen team, the barman, the boat captain and his crew, the tour guides (both the experienced hands and their brand new trainees), resident gaucho (and even his extremely fun loving dog, called Gaucho) and the management team (Andres greets and sends you off and is fully aware of everything that has been a part of your stay, in my case even a momentary loss of my spectacles he knew about!). Tierra Chiloe and the team went that extra mile for us as guests to show us a great time and I want it on the record:

- Our LAN Chile flight was over an hour delayed: but Tierra Chiloe ensured not only a driver but a guide was on hand to pick us up at the airport so we could get on with the business of making late plans for our tours, including a very late (but full service lunch), no questions or grumbles;
- A very special visit in the village of Mechuque as part of an island hoping tour to the family home of one of our guides together with a very personal story about some of her family’s life on the island – unaffected, poignant and a unique insight to life on this enchanting off the tourist track island;
- A romantic dinner cruise on the hotel boat Williche; acknowledging that the stunning calm sunlit evening was not in the power of the hotel to deliver, the wonderful captain and crew, including private chef and cocktail waiter, was and they could not have been more friendly, discerning and attentive – even slowing down and stopping upon request for a particularly romantic and scenic spot in the bay as the sun’s twilight lingered a few minutes longer, no grumbles, just some quiet smiles as the crew enjoyed the moment with us); and
- a special pre-breakfast horse ride through the hotel surrounds and along the beach and foreshore (including some water traversing) with the hotel’s resident gaucho and Gaucho his dog, literally in our final hours at the hotel before whisking us off for our onward flights.

Tierra Chiloe is a newish hotel – perhaps just putting in the extra mile to get its reputation going - but to be frank, if this is the case they are doing it in style. The property is sensational, with a team that are sincerely the most welcoming, accommodating and considerate I have encountered in some time. For what it is worth, I hope they continue to take the same pride in their hotel and their work for many years to come for the benefit of all lucky enough to stay with them.
