We were picked up by one of the Jasmin family members on the street and were first not considering to go, because we are not really lacquerware fans. Finally we went with him and it turned out to be a very interesting stop, with patient explications of all the different production steps and observing the family members doing them one after another. We had no pressure to buy at the end and were even offered water and some fruit. Would recomend it to give it a try if you ever are approached by a stranger with a yasmine card.

Not the easiest place to find at first, but definitely worth the effort. I bought some pieces at some other shops first but wish I had bought everything here. They give a more detailed explanation of the lacquerware process than the larger shops. And the quality of the pieces definitely feels like it's a few steps above a lot of the other shops. I needed to buy an extra nice piece for a 50th birthday gift and I'm glad I waited to buy it here. There seems to be an attention to detail that's better here than at some of the other shops. Not as big a selection as the bigger, more well known shops, but still a LOT to choose from. The family who run it are very sweet and put no sales pressure on you and will patiently show you piece after piece and help you compare pieces. Prices are not marked on the pieces but we're very reasonable for the quality and craftsmanship. You won't find this kind of thing at home.

The challenge is finding the store. First, google maps shows it accurately, but its difficult to see the sign from the road.

If coming from Nyaung U or Old Bagan, look for the sign for Golden Cuckoo on the right, under the tree (see photo). You won't see the Jasmine Family sign because it's blocked by the Golden Cuckoo sign. Turn right at the Golden Cuckoo sign, BEAR RIGHT, not left, and go beyond Golden Cuckoo. The shop will be on the right. Lots of people live around there so just stop and ask anyone if you get confused. They will gladly set you on the right path.

If you are coming from New Bagan, you should see the sign on the left side of the road (see photo). Turn left at the sign and follow the directions as above.

Also, and surprisingly, they take MC and Visa! Can also arrange overseas shipping but it's very expensive.

Highly recommended if you're in the market for a beautiful, handcrafted memento of Bagan and Myanmar.

The quality of the lacquerware here is pretty impressive- it was nice seeing the dedication to their art. You could tell the quality was noticeably better than others in the village. The son working there was also nice and wasn’t pushing a sale too hard. Just make sure you bargain fairly hard and get well past that “20% discount off the sticker price for not being a part of a tour group”.

We actually had no idea/intention of going to Jasmine Family Lacquerware Workshop but we are so lucky that the owner caught us just before we were about to set off on our scooters from the temple.

The family that run this workshop are extremely knowledgeable and provided us with a run through of how Lacquerware is made, how to tell whether it is made cheaply or not and then showed us around their shop. They even threw in a free water and some tamarin sweets as it was a hot day.

How to get there: It is not easy to find (because some fool has put a sign in front of theirs) so I am going to attach some photos that hopefully help people locate it more easily. If you are coming along the main road headed westwards you will notice a big tree with plenty of signs surrounding it, hidden there is the first Jasmine sign (BLUE). Take that left and continue for about 100 metres (you'll pass another blue shop) and it should be there on the right hand side.

Opening hours: When we asked taxi drivers / guides for the opening hours they always said it was closed but that they could take us to another shop (presumably their relatives/friends shop where they get commission). In reality, the shop is open 7 days a week from roughly 7AM to 8PM.

Had a great time, they showed us the whole process of making the lacquer.
No pressure to buy and the prices are cheaper than the other places I've seen.
