The quality of the lacquerware here is pretty impressive- it was nice seeing the dedication to their art. You could tell the quality was noticeably better than others in the village. The son working there was also nice and wasn’t pushing a sale too hard. Just make sure you bargain fairly hard and get well past that “20% discount off the sticker price for not being a part of a tour group”.

We actually had no idea/intention of going to Jasmine Family Lacquerware Workshop but we are so lucky that the owner caught us just before we were about to set off on our scooters from the temple.

The family that run this workshop are extremely knowledgeable and provided us with a run through of how Lacquerware is made, how to tell whether it is made cheaply or not and then showed us around their shop. They even threw in a free water and some tamarin sweets as it was a hot day.

How to get there: It is not easy to find (because some fool has put a sign in front of theirs) so I am going to attach some photos that hopefully help people locate it more easily. If you are coming along the main road headed westwards you will notice a big tree with plenty of signs surrounding it, hidden there is the first Jasmine sign (BLUE). Take that left and continue for about 100 metres (you'll pass another blue shop) and it should be there on the right hand side.

Opening hours: When we asked taxi drivers / guides for the opening hours they always said it was closed but that they could take us to another shop (presumably their relatives/friends shop where they get commission). In reality, the shop is open 7 days a week from roughly 7AM to 8PM.

Had a great time, they showed us the whole process of making the lacquer.
No pressure to buy and the prices are cheaper than the other places I've seen.

Went by taxi and spent and hour learning the traditional art of lacquer ware. From the bamboo weaving to the many layers of lacquer that are applied and dried then hand painted this is a place not to be missed. Excellent prices for the many hours it takes to make just one of these fine pieces. We will treasure our purchases as a reminder of a fabulous time spent in Bagan.
This craft is so amazing and takes so much skill and time it's great to see it surviving in the fast age we now live in.

If you want to visit a true family run lacquerware shop this is the place to go. The family is super nice and they will tell you all about the process. The prices are better too since it's a small family shop. Great people!
