Went there with a bunch of friends.
The Alcatraz itself is a restricted area, visitors boat only allowed to roam ~20meters from the harbor.
But the other part of this island is open for public, some average beach and a rustic Dutch fort is the highlight. I was lucky enough to meet a fisherman who offered a pretty cheap live LOBSTER here, if you're a seafood lover open your ears or ask around.
Boat rent is 25k idr/pax for Teluk Penyu - Nusakambangan return, add another 25k idr/pax to roam around the prison entry.

I have planned to visit this island since my first visit to Cilacap, but only had the opportunity this 2017 visit. This is known as the island of jails. There are several jail inside, with various category. Jail for drugs crime, jail for political pridoners, and jail for general crimes. The island is beautiful especially the Pasir Putih beach. A worthed visit.

Here are what I learn from my last visit:

There are two parts of Nusakambangan, i.e. the Eastern and Western part. The Western part is what the island is mostly known for, state penitentiaries for hardened criminals. It also has glorious beaches like Permisan, Pasir Putih, etc. However, you need permit and clearances to visit this part. These are not easy to come by, unless you know a guy who knows a guy.

The Eastern part is much more accessible. Go to Teluk Penyu beach and no sooner than you park you car, a local will approach and offer you a boat trip across the narrow channel. The trip usually costs IDR 20,000,-, per person or maybe IDR 25,000,- during holiday seasons. The price is for a round trip, they will give you their contact number and the name of the boat. Once you've had your fill with the island, call the number and they will pick you up and take you back to Teluk Penyu. Oh, and they also give you a life vest.

The island has some nice beaches. The boat will drop you off at Karang Tengah Beach and from this point, i've been informed that you can walk along a trail amidst pristine tropical jungle for half an hour to Karang Pandan beach, or further to Karang Bandung.

We didn't fancy a trek so we ended up strolling along the Karang Tengah Beach. It has black sand, and quite rocky. There are made up stalls hawking local delicacies like mendoan or tahu masak (tofu and bean sprout in peanut sauce). The price is quite reasonable. A coconut is IDR 10,000,-, mendoans at IDR 3,000,- each, and tahu masak for a modest IDR 7,000,-.

A short walk from the stalls you will find remnants of an old Portuguese fort. The locals there told me of another, bigger fort nearby but we didn't get a chance to visit.

All in all, it was time well spent. We were really thrilled by the boat ride, the beach, and the fort.
