Show lessHi madam0n,
We are thrilled by the fact that you enjoyed your stay at Summerhill Guest Estate and will be sharing your compliments with the rest of our team.
We look forward to welcoming you again soon and spreading some more of Durban´s sunshine.
Warm wishes,
Your Summerhill Team
Small room, place has bad outside lighting & dark, switches for lights are located weirdly in the room so light for bathroom is by the cupboards in main bedroom. No toilet paper holder so toilet rolls are there on the side, toilet leaking water on the floor also no curtains / privacy in bathroom. Room fully carpeted but smell the dampness. Car park is in a tennis courtyard then you need to walk uphill to your room. I wouldn’t like to come through here again.
Hello Rafael,
We apologies for the negative experience you had at Summerhill Guest Estate and are grateful for your constructive criticism.
Obviously there are points mentioned above that are inexcusable.
We take these very seriously and have amended them with immediate effect.
What should be bared in mind, is that we are continuously aspiring towards offering our dear guests a better product and a more comfortable stay, making certain changes (such as the parking on the tennis court) temporary necessities.
We additionally apologies for any inconvenience caused by this.
Nevertheless, we find it most effective to be confronted with queries or criticism directly, rather than having to react to a post that was written twenty minutes after check-in. The fact that there is no mention of our approach towards yourself and the resulting upgrade (that you seemed very happy with), shows an unfortunate lack of objectiveness.
Best wishes,
Your Summerhill Team
I have never stayed at the Estate, but have had the privilege of dining at the restaurant on a number of occasions and I can honestly say the food is some of the best I have eaten anywhere in the world. The owner’s son and his wife (who moved from Germany this year) run the Living Room restaurant amazingly, with Johannes cooking up innovative and delicious meals and Johanna offering expert suggestions for wines and delightful conversation. The homemade bread is always particularly delicious. My family usually chooses to do the 5 course tasting menu, and we love being surprised with each new course, knowing that each will be as mouthwatering as the last. Definitely the best restaurant in Durban; and the perfect, intimate setting for special occasions.
Hello Jessica,
We are delighted to hear such high praise!
The LivingRoom team can only say that it is an absolute pleasure hosting your family and yourself.
We are always working on upping our game and are sure that we will offer a couple of new surprises at our next meeting.
We are looking forward to the next evening you enjoy with us.
Thank you for taking the time for this awesome review!

Our first visit to the Living Room yesterday evening was superb. We were blown away by the meticulous attention to food plating, flavours, and avant-garde dishes for Durban's culinary scene. The beetroot butter paired with homemade sourdough bread, the sashimi, chili and peanut amuse-bouche, followed by the duck with dehydrated then rehydrated pickled carrot and citrus was an explosion of tastes. All these dishes were paired with South African wines and a pale ale. Fantastic setting under thatch roof with beautiful wooden beams, roaring log fire, and attentive and knowledgeable team on hand made for a superb evening amongst a table of 10 friends!
We stayed 3 nights and were treated to a 5-course dinner which was out-of-this world! Most of the food is either grown there (herbs and spices) or prepared there (like the tasty bread) and they use mostly organic foods. The estate is very big and the dining/breakfast area cosy and warm. Staff and owners make you feel most welcome, like at home. What a memorable experience!
Thanks Horst,
We are thoroughly happy with the fact that you felt welcome and at home.
Beyond all the services we offer, we truly believe that this familiar and warm welcome makes us different to others in the industry.
Thanks again for taking the time and reviewing us so splendidly.
Warm regards,
Your LivingRoom & Summerhill team
Had the privilege of staying at Summerhill recently. Arrived early evening and found the guest house with its old world charm without a problem.
Spacious and clean room with a comfortable bed. Beautiful gardens and view from the dining area and the bedroom. Too bad its winter - the pool looked really inviting!
The dinner in the main dining room was delicious. Had a taste of their fresh home made bread with camembert as a starter. Chose the chicken with sweet potato and gorgonzola as the main meal and it was delicious.
Excellent chocolate parfait on the menu for dessert. You can even order some of the homemade bread to take away.
Care was put into the menu - they change it daily.
Excellent selection of wines and the hosts were delightful. Christine kept me company throughout dinner and it was refreshing to experience the enthusiasm with which they run the family establishment.
Live music on a Wednesday so will try visit again soon.
