Simply The Best

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 14, 2022
We have just returned from a 7-day stay, our second time at Paparei Bungalows, and again, we had a wonderful time here. Paparei offers two lovely little one bedroom units side by side on the very edge of the beach on the sunset side of the lagoon. The units are situated in picturesque gardens and are attractively finished, comfortable, clean and well-appointed, with all the fittings and comfort you would expect of a quality motel. There is air con and all the windows and doors are screened. The beach is very private as there only a few other small private properties nearby, and the view from the units is amazing - just palm trees, white sand and the tranquil lagoon. You are literally on the beach in 10 steps from the deck. The beach here is not great for swimming as it is very shallow, but it is a wonderful place to relax, and good swimming spots are a short scooter ride away. There are loungers, a BBQ hut and picnic table, and a well equipped kitchen inside if you want to self-cater. Paparei is well-located along the main road, but nothing is too far away on Aitutaki and a scooter takes you everywhere you want to go. Nowhere on Aitutaki is crowded or busy. The owners of Paparei live on site in their own beautiful home, they take great care of the whole property and look after their guests very well. This is simply the best place to stay!

Had 3 wonderful nights in this gorgeous little beachfront bungalow. The hammock & loungers were very relaxing, as is the little deck, where you can watch the sunset & eat your breakfast. Vicki picked us up from the airport & dropped us back & was so very helpful. Vicki even left a jar of homemade pawpaw jam, in the fridge for us. Had lunch at Koru café, which was yummy.

Wow what more can we say. We stayed 3 nights at the Paparei bungalows, which are situated right on the beach amazing location. Peter and Vikki ensured our stay was perfect, attending to booking tours and restaurants for us. Fantastic hosts for a fantastic holiday.

Its hard to beat these 2 beach bungalows for 2 couples traveling together. They're very private and are right on the beach. We took the 4 lounge chairs down to the sandy beach on several occasions especially for sunset. Vicki and Peter, the parents of the owners, picked us up at the airport and stopped by the Aquila car rental shop before escorting us to the property. They were very sweet and gave us numerous tips on Aitutaki. Their daughter, Trina, usually manages these units, but during our stay she was busy running their excellent Koru Cafe (which by the way has wonderful food). Paparei is conveniently located on the West side of the island where most of the resorts and restaurants are. Its easy to let time go by slowly here as there was really no reason to get moving too early. Loved that! Each bungalow has a covered veranda big enough for us to have 4 chairs and lounge during the short rainstorms. The interior was comfortable too although we spent little time there. We purchased some bandwidth from Blue Sky Internet and were able to connect at Paparei. We'd love to go back to this quaint little island paradise.

My husband and I booked this bungalow through a travel site for August 2019,very quickly they asked for 30% which was NZD$288 there was a no free cancellation attached.
I sent Paparei an email to ask for a receipt, no reply. The money was taken 10 months prior to our trip.
Really unexpectedly my husband became very sick and we had to cancel.I emailed them and told them what had happened NO REPLY,by this stage I don't know if or who has the money.
I contacted the travel site and they rang twice NO ANSWER ,they then emailed as well ,NO RESPONSE,
The travel site told me that they are escalating this as it is suspicious.
Managers were contacted at the travel website and they decided to ring again.
Finally someone answered, they have received all the emails and money, but had to bothered to respond. Won't return any money as a good will gesture and just ignore everyone.
Go through a reputable travel site, this is a very small business and they obviously need the money. Don't be rude Paparei return emails, don't ignore customers and be totally transparent.
We had no idea if our money had been taken by somebody else.So glad we aren't going to stay there. If we do travel to Atutaki we definitely won't be staying at Paparei
Bungalows.Go through a travel site so you can track down the money trail.

We stayed in Paparei Bungalows in early June and booked through Airbnb. In hindsight I realised that it was best to book direct through the website as specials are available. We paid a total of $953.59 AUD for 4 nights and absolutely loved it.

The bungalows have a really nice set up with a bedroom and separate bathroom as well as an open plan kitchen lounge area. All areas were spotlessly clean. We really loved the little touches in the bungalow, like the fruit/milk/delicious coconut cake that Vikki provides on arrival, the flower decorations, the hand pump soap for the bathroom basin to name just a few examples. The bathroom had all required essentials as well as a hairdryer.

The weather was glorious while we were there too. While it still was a little humid at this time of year we found that the bungalow was not at all uncomfortable as the breeze flows through the screened windows so sleeping was no problem.

Vikki and Peter were fabulous hosts and went way beyond what is normally expected, providing us with local knowledge and sorting out some local bookings for us. Nothing was a problem for them but they were never overtly attentive, just available when you needed to ask for assistance. For example, one night the place across the road where we were going to get a takeaway dinner was closed and as Vikki knew our plans she came and told us then drove us to another. Highly recommended.

Hints
1. During our stay we ate out most of the time. The food at the nearby Pacific Resort is great for a bite to eat but the drinks are very, very expensive (no bottle of red wine less than $68). The Aitutaki Lagoon Resort was great for a late pizza lunch and has fabulous views but we did hear that others were turned away so maybe a mid-afternoon visit may be key. Loved Tamunu.
2. Neibaa’s grocery shop on the eastern side of the island in Vaipae is the only grocery store open on Sundays from 6am until late but is closed on Saturdays.
3. (please note: no fault of property owner): A couple of bookings that I made prior to arrival for early in our trip were cancelled. There was not enough people booked for an afternoon dive and a lagoon trip with a separate provider was cancelled on a perfect day as they “misread” the weather forecast. This had a flow on effect during our stay as each trip was put back a day or two so I only managed to get out on the lagoon once in a 4 day stay. Sadly because of this, if you have limited time, and want to book a lagoon cruise I’d recommend going with a larger operator. They are less likely to cancel due to a larger number of affected people.
4. Mount Maungapu is the best place in Aitutaki for panoramic views but be warned the road/walk from across from the Paradise Cove Resort is really quite steep. We drove up the road to just short of the track and walked from there and it still took us a while as the track, besides being steep, has loose stones.
5. We think that there is no real advantage of hiring a motorbike over a car other than that it is cheaper (and for insurance purposes you don’t require a motor bike licence). We criss crossed all over Aitutaki and there really was no area that was only suitable for bikes.
