Ahhh the serenity!

We stayed in Paparei Bungalows in early June and booked through Airbnb. In hindsight I realised that it was best to book direct through the website as specials are available. We paid a total of $953.59 AUD for 4 nights and absolutely loved it.

The bungalows have a really nice set up with a bedroom and separate bathroom as well as an open plan kitchen lounge area. All areas were spotlessly clean. We really loved the little touches in the bungalow, like the fruit/milk/delicious coconut cake that Vikki provides on arrival, the flower decorations, the hand pump soap for the bathroom basin to name just a few examples. The bathroom had all required essentials as well as a hairdryer.

The weather was glorious while we were there too. While it still was a little humid at this time of year we found that the bungalow was not at all uncomfortable as the breeze flows through the screened windows so sleeping was no problem.

Vikki and Peter were fabulous hosts and went way beyond what is normally expected, providing us with local knowledge and sorting out some local bookings for us. Nothing was a problem for them but they were never overtly attentive, just available when you needed to ask for assistance. For example, one night the place across the road where we were going to get a takeaway dinner was closed and as Vikki knew our plans she came and told us then drove us to another. Highly recommended.

Hints
1. During our stay we ate out most of the time. The food at the nearby Pacific Resort is great for a bite to eat but the drinks are very, very expensive (no bottle of red wine less than $68). The Aitutaki Lagoon Resort was great for a late pizza lunch and has fabulous views but we did hear that others were turned away so maybe a mid-afternoon visit may be key. Loved Tamunu.
2. Neibaa’s grocery shop on the eastern side of the island in Vaipae is the only grocery store open on Sundays from 6am until late but is closed on Saturdays.
3. (please note: no fault of property owner): A couple of bookings that I made prior to arrival for early in our trip were cancelled. There was not enough people booked for an afternoon dive and a lagoon trip with a separate provider was cancelled on a perfect day as they “misread” the weather forecast. This had a flow on effect during our stay as each trip was put back a day or two so I only managed to get out on the lagoon once in a 4 day stay. Sadly because of this, if you have limited time, and want to book a lagoon cruise I’d recommend going with a larger operator. They are less likely to cancel due to a larger number of affected people.
4. Mount Maungapu is the best place in Aitutaki for panoramic views but be warned the road/walk from across from the Paradise Cove Resort is really quite steep. We drove up the road to just short of the track and walked from there and it still took us a while as the track, besides being steep, has loose stones.
5. We think that there is no real advantage of hiring a motorbike over a car other than that it is cheaper (and for insurance purposes you don’t require a motor bike licence). We criss crossed all over Aitutaki and there really was no area that was only suitable for bikes.

We were welcomed at the airport by our very charming host Vicki. She kindly took us to a couple of shops on our way, and even thought we were early Vicki had kindly arranged that our Bungalow was ready for us. Martin took great care of our, the standard was immaculate. The Bungalow was delightful, facing the lagoon, and sunset with the whispering palms keeping us cool in the shade. Vicki even managed to get us some MahiMahi caught that day! We wined and dinner like "kings". The warmth, generosity and kindness from our hosts Vicki and Peter was exceptional. The cherry on top was our fabulous massage, see picture!

Room tip: There are just two so either Bungalow is ideal.

We chose Paparei Bungalows based on the excellent reviews that we'd seen on Trip Advisor. In particular, the lovely things that were said about the host (Vicki) was the clear differentiator for us from the other accommodation available. We were not disappointed. Vicki and her husband Peter were so kind and hospitable towards us and our children and the location of their bungalows just steps away from the beach on the sunset side of the island was nothing short of idyllic. In addition to fetching us from the airport and treating us to her delicious baking, Vicki advised us on activities and went out of her way to assist with making bookings for dinner, diving with Bubbles Below and the Kia Orana lagoon and snorkelling cruise which were both excellent. We can't recommend Paparei Bungalows highly enough and can't wait to return there one day.

The bungalow we stayed in was peaceful and in a gorgeous location. Watching the Sunset every night was great and the Bungalow has every thing that you need. We were spoilt by the host and tours and confirmations were all taken care of by Vicki. Would highly recommend this place

Room tip: Its a bungalow so you have the whole thing to yourself

Paparei Bungalows were a little slice of heaven on Aitutaki. From the moment we were picked up from the airport by Vicki and had a beautiful flower ei placed on us to when we left we had a fabulous time. The hosts, Vicki and Peter looked after you well - it is more like coming to stay with a wonderful grandmother! There were home made treats including coconut cake, jam and relish as well as fresh fruit and rainwater. There are two bungalows which are on the edge of the sandy shore. They are spotlessly clean and equiped if you choose to do cooking during your stay. There is a large balcony which is a great spot for eating or enjoying a drink. There are sun lounges and hammocks on the beach area. The lagoon near the bungalows is not great for swimming but the sunset views are awesome. It is a perfect place to relax and unwind - so tranquil. Vicki helped out with bookings for dinner and car hire and Peter showed the girls how to prepare fresh coconut for drinking and eating. We did a Black Pearl private lagoon tour, visited the highest point, snorkelled at the marine station and also viewed the clams as well as swam at Outu Beach. Loved our little break. Highly recommended.

Vicki and Peter were excellent hosts at Paparei. Warm, welcoming, and accomodating; it was pleasure to stay at their place. The location, both on the beachfront and central to the island was perfect; especially for us kiters who would catch the boat down at the wharf every morning to head out to Maina. The bungalow was clean and well-appointed for our needs, with a lovely deck and reliable hot water for showers (reliable being the key word, here.). Vicki would bring us fruits or homemade banana bread sometimes. The cafe across the road had good coffee and big eats. Scooter rental (Rino's) is down the road. There are kayak you can rent for a paddle right out front. And the sunsets make for an incredible cocktail hour on what feels like your own private beach. It was great. We would stay here again.

Room tip: There are only two bungalows, so not much difference.
