Perfect Place

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 6, 2013
We have just spent 6 nights at Paparei Bungalows and loved every moment. We chose Paparei through being lucky enough to have seen it while on a previous holiday to Aitutaki, thought it looked just right for us, and were determined to stay there next time. We certainly weren't disappointed! The 2 bungalows are located only metres from the beautiful beach, each with a verandah, tables and chairs and sun loungers at your disposal. The bungalow is spotlessly clean, with a very well-equipped kitchen, dining seating and couch in the front room, a lovely comfortable firm bed with feather pillows, and a sunny, shining clean bathroom. Everything looks just like you would want it to at home, and it works like that too - the plumbing, hot water, fixtures etc are in top shape and the units are obviously maintained to the highest standard. All the windows and doors are screened and we had no bugs or mosquitos inside at all, and the unit had mosquito coils for our use on the verandah in the evening although we actually didn't have any mosquito problems outside either. (The weather was lovely at this time of year, warm with gentle breezes but little humidity and was so nice). Loved the high ceilings, lined with macrocarpa wood milled from Vicki and Peters farm in New Zealand...
The hospitality shown to us by Vicki was fantastic, she is such a natural hostess. She had provided a huge bowlful of fresh fruit and her now-famous baking on our arrival, including home made jam and chutney, and kept on popping in with more goodies during the week. I needed some reef shoes, she found me some, It showered one day and she appeared with raincoats and umbrellas in case we wanted to go for a walk, offered us books to read and gave us good advice about beaches, attractions and other useful information. Nothing was too much trouble. Fresh towels, including beach towels were available every day if required and the unit was cleaned every day, yet all of this was done without any fuss.
We watched the sunset every night and were also very fortunate to see whales passing by just beyond the reef one evening. The beach was almost empty every day, apart from the occasional fisherman, the local heron and ourselves. Swimming is not possible here as it is too shallow but it is a fantastic spot for rest and relaxation.
A bonus of the location was the proximity to local shops, and Rino's car and bike rental over the road. (We hired a good motorbike for $20 per day.)
Enough said - thank you Vicki and Peter, it really was a perfect place.

Room Tip: Both bungalows are identical. They are situated close together but are set up for couples.

Loved this place. Gorgeous setting. Very sweet proprietors (Vickie and Peter) who made is feel very well looked after. Arranged our tours and baked us treats. There are only two bungalows here and the place is very peaceful and private.

What a wonderful stay ! I was amazed by the beauty of the island and the superb location of Paparei Bungalows; Right on the beach they offer spectacular sunsets and are in the center of the village with great access to everything you might need. The bungalow itself is very clean and offers all the comfort you need. Best part is probably the lovely welcome of Vicki the owner and how she makes sure you have the best stay ever. Little drawback could be the fact that you can hear occasional scooters at night. Despite, will definitely be back !

Along with our 3 children my husband and I have stayed with Peter and Vicki on several occassions.
We just love Aitutaki, but really it is the warmth and generosity of Vicki and Peter that keep us coming back.
You will not find nicer people to stay with!! We feel like we are coming home to stay with family for a holiday.
The units are perfect - clean - tidy and situated close to the beach and other attractions.

There are two one-bedroom bungalows on the west side of the island, right on the beach/lagoon. They are equipped with a fridge, electric frypan, stereo, small dining table, couch, double-bed and separate bathroom/toilet. Each has a deck with two deckchairs. The owner lives in the main house behind, and regularly drops in coconut bread, banana cake and fruit. The beach itself is nice, although the lagoon is not really swimmable (too shallow), so you do need to walk/drive further down the beach. Dining out also requires a walk/drive. There's a shop just across the road, and a couple more a short walk away. The only thing - not the owner's fault - are the noisy roosters! But at least there are no dogs on Aitutaki, thanks to an earlier, far-sighted decision by a chief.

Stayed with Vicki and Peter at Paparei bungalows for 6 nights with my Wife and two children (2 and 12) and I can safely say we had a great time.

Lodgings:
Terrific, perfect for our requirements, very clean, comfortable and right on the beach. We could sit on the deck and watch the kids play in the water, or we could play in the water ourselves whilst the little one slept. We cooked bacon and eggs a few mornings and had some sausages for lunch one day, so cooking facilities are quite adequate.

Location:
Across the road or only a short stroll away are Cafes (KuKus) and shops, I was happy to walk to the Heineken store which has a good stock level. We also hired a kayak from Kukus across the road for only $20 per day. This allowed us to paddle out to some very good snorkelling or swimming.

Owners:
Peter and Vicki were great to have around, always willing to have a chat or make a booking or give advice. The fresh home made coconut loaf, banana cake and scones were delightful and a very unexpected suprise. Our little one called Vicki Grandma for the whole trip, which she didn't mind. Vickis actual grand children were a pleasure to have around to play with our kids.

Overall, I would happily go back to Aitutaki in the future, and staying at Paparei will be a must.
