Best Experience of Our Lives

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 24, 2016
I travelled with my mom (56) and brother (27) so there were 3 of us... we booked the hotel the night before and when we got there they told us they only had a room booked for 2 and we had to pay extra... even though we already paid around $300 for the one night. It was high season, around December 23rd, but we were furious because $300 was the highest we were willing to pay and we ended up having to pay extra because we had no other choice. After paying, they offered to take our bags to our rooms and give us a tour of the place. The people were very nice and spoke great english and were very nice, which was very helpful. Driving into the parking of the place (we had rented a car for our week in CR) was pretty difficult as it was a short steep hill and the parking was pretty much downhill but luckily my brother is a pro! The place was BEAUTIFUL. The views were remarkable, as well as the poolside. You could see Manuel Antonio entirely from the terrace. Anyways, the best part by far was when the person who was giving us a tour said he had a surprise for us. After giving us welcome drinks, it was time to go to our room. We walked to the 2nd floor and walk down the hall and through a doorway that reads "Presidential Suite"... They had upgraded us because of the miscommunication and booking us wrongly! THIS WAS INCREDIBLE! We even stayed an extra night at the same rate because we loved it so much which was beyond accommodating. I recommend this hotel to anyone who is travelling to Manuel Antonio. Presidential Suite or not... the money is so worth it! Breakfast was also very good- I recommend the Eggs Benny or the Crepes. ALSO if you walk maybe 10 minutes down the road there is a beautiful beach. Ask the reception...it's a hidden gem. Thank you Mansion Inn for a truly unforgettable experience!

The entire staff at LaMansion Inn are to be congratulated on their superb customer service. From the moment we checked in until we departed, every staff member went out of their way to accommodate us. Our rooms were beautiful and there was nothing we could have needed that was not taken care of. Our breakfasts in the dining area were delicious and when we celebrated two birthdays the staff made us feel like royalty. We will certainly return to this hotel again.

Wow- what a great hotel. Staff so friendly and very keen to ensure you have a great stay. Even when booking a cruise they were keen to explain the pros and cons for the alternatives to ensure we chose the right one for us.
Beautiful views, a little bit away from the main drag, but all the better for it. They arrange a free taxi service to the main beach- which is very efficient and the driver wouldn't even accept a tip from us!
It's easy to get the local bus back to the top of the hill, every 15 mins and less than one USD each- easy downhill walk from stop.
Further down the hill is a quiet small, pretty beach- no facilities but very pleasant to swim in.
The owner seems to be an eccentric who worked for both the USA and Russian press offices and so has lots of pictures with important politicians- but his bat cave bar is weird!
Excellent spa- we just went for 20 minute massage, complimentary- if we had gone earlier would definitely have used more than once!
Only drawbacks we can think of is that as its been added to over the years lots of weird steps up and down, with some cracks due to earthquakes, but obviously out of the hotels control! Also the swimming pool, although extremely pretty, because of the heat and sun, meant the water was slightly murky- we didn't stay long in the jacuzzi as odd smell.
Overall a fantastic stay- well done to all the staff-we hope we get the chance to return!

Thanks for your very nice comments but rest assured I do not feel "eccentric" - I just enjoy my life and am proud of my past having contributed in a small way to Democracy in Washington D.C. and Moscow as the "Helmsman" of both press clubs for many years. Regarding your comments about the pool and Jacuzzi. The pump system cleans the pool continuously and the water of the Jacuzzi gets changed every day. This is necessary because I am sure you have noticed we are in the jungle and with windy conditions leaves continuously fall in the pool and we need to take these leaves out several times a day. This is what sometimes cause a murkiness.

The Mansion Inn slogan is 'Five-star inn at a three-star rate', which is incorrect on both counts. This is not a five-star inn anymore and the rates are certainly higher than those for a three star establishment.
The location is most certainly five star. Perched on top of the crest of a hill it has fabulous views over Manuel Antonio national park and a smaller beach nearby.
The sky lounge (=roof-top terrace) is a comfortable place to be, but could be cleaner. Whilst we were there the tables were not cleaned regularly and the floor was swept just once in four days.

The hotel needs to refocus on basics and forget about the luxury yachts for hire etc. A hotel room should be clean (ours wasn't, glasses were dirty, floor was not swept). In our room the table was very tatty, the roof of the balcony had several holes in, the info folder was broken and torn, the bath gel ran out after the first night but was not replaced for three days, the bath had seen better days, etc etc.

The hotel offers a meal plan, but this is fairly confusing as sometimes we were given a reduced menu and other times the full menu. Breakfast was disappointing with butter and jam from packets rather than fresh/homemade, orange juice from a carton and no fresh juice offer (shame in a country where fresh juice is in plentiful supply), poor quality yoghurt in a carton.

To have the owner's large portrait looking down at your bed was strange to say the least. La Mansion Inn is very proud of its celebrity visitors, but these days it is living off past achievements. Time to refocus on the basics.

The staff should be given a special mention, as their service was excellent. They were extremely helpful and went out of their way to make our stay as good as it could be. They worked ridiculously long hours, but always with a smile.

Room tip: Avoid rooms 18 and 19 as they are right above the car park and you'll be woken up every morning at 5.30 am by the delivery lorries.

Thanks for your review... Having said that I wonder why you did not contact us about your observations as our personalized Welcome Letter recommends instead pof waiting to write a review. We also place daily calls to our rooms to see if something if our guests have any needs in particular. Why did you not mention your observations to our Reservationist or our Operations Manager who walks around all day soliciting feed-back? All part of my hotel are on a rigerous cleaning schedule. It is simply imposssible that our public spaces are not regularly cleaned. I also take offense that "a large portrait of the owner" is looking down at your bed. That is simply incorrect. There are no "portraits" or pictures of mine in any rooms. The only "Portrait" that hangs in a room (Presidential Suite) is a 17th Century copy of a Rembrant along with some pictures of CR presidents who have stayed at the La Mansion Inn. However they are in the living room NOT in the bedroom.

I concur with the balance of these reviews that the views are outstanding. I'm not going to bore you with huge amounts of details but a quick summary below.

The good
- great views
- excellent room
- attention to service
- the food
- friendly staff

The bad
- execution on service wasn't great
- limited seating around pool
- the food

All in all a very nice stay. They put a great deal of attention on service I just think they miss a little on execution. The food is in both categories because we had a bad experience with a burger but the the dinner menu with local fish was outstanding.

If you are looking for a quiet stay that's relaxing I would recommend this spot.

Room tip: Some rooms have a beach view but are located over the entrance - you'll want a room that looks out a different way.

We spent three nights at La Mansion Inn for the first leg of our three-destination, 11-night Costa Rican vacation. The property is located up on a hill with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Manuel Antonio National Park, white sand beaches, and incredible rock formations. Our room was spacious and attractive (albeit the chandelier was a bit fussy for our taste), the pool was nice, and the hotel is close to several restaurants with terrific sunset views. The front desk staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. The mattress, though, was rather hard, which is the only reason we are giving a four-star rating instead of five.

I should also mention that we booked our entire Costa Rican trip through Gecko Trail Costa Rica. La Mansion was one of the recommended Manuel Antonio properties on Gecko Trail's web site, and it did not disappoint. One nice thing about going through Gecko Trail is that it took the guesswork out of finding a quality hotel. Anybody considering a trip to Costa Rica should definitely check them out!

Thanks for your very nice review. As my personalized Welcome Letter states "should you wish to have your matrass or pillows changed, please let us know". We could have very easily changed this matrass to one more of your liking and taken care of this small problem.
