We booked the adventure package from Groupon and could not be more pleased with our experience at Hotel Lavas del Arenal. Authentic Costa Rican breakfast every day included was great. As the other reviewers stated, this isn't the Ritz, but the bedrooms are more than acceptable. Flat screen mounted TV was a nice touch, but we really only used our room for sleeping as the days are packed with activities. Carlos was so extremely helpful. A few tips I wish I had known. WiFi is strong toward the office, but very weak toward the back rooms. We were in 14 and had to go outside to use the WiFi. As a small business owner, this was something important, but going outside is not the worst thing in the world. Have Google Translate on hand or get good at charades if you do not speak Spanish. I know a little Spanish and it was enough to get by, but not everyone is fluent in English. Most of the activities were in English and there wasn't much of a barrier. Taxis are readily available and everywhere we went was great. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would come back again!

We visited with a Groupon purchased. Hotel is a bit out of town and very quiet! About $8 each way for a taxi ride into LaFortuna. We were out on tours everyday and ate most of our dinners at the hotel due to being tired or the rain. Limited menu for dinner but home cooked meals that were fantastic. Try the empenadas! This is not a fancy place but for us it was perfect as we only slept there. Word of caution there is nothing near the hotel - so either sleep, eat, read or go do something! Groupon tour worked great. Highly recommend. Mind you this is not the Marriott or a resort, so if you need that in a hotel - then this is not the place. Wifi a bit spotty at best but if you really need it you can go sit by the front office.

My wife and I purchased a Groupon for an adventure tour of the Fortuna area and we stayed at Lavas de Arenal. I want to point out that this is NOT a resort. This is a Costa Rican hotel. It was perfect for our trip. Breakfast was pretty good, no complaints. We didn't eat dinner there as we generally took the $7 ride with drivers the Manager, Carlos has into Fortuna. The hotel was old, bit looks like it is getting a face lift. Carlos was absolutely fantastic. Anything you needed, the man would take care of it. We have done lots of traveling, but I have never met anyone so dedicated to their job and it's clear he has a lot of pride running the hotel and keeping it maintained. We didn't have hot water one morning, so on our way out we let him know. When we got back that night, the hot water was working. My wife and I have stayed all over, and the service here was top notch. The only "negative" thing I can think of is that there were always some sort of bugs in our room. Nothing gross or anything where we were uncomfortable. It's a rainforest. They were to be expected. If we were to go back to Fortuna, I would have no issues staying here again.

Thank you for everything Carlos!! You made our trip stress free and highly enjoyable.
Also, can you ship me a bottle of Cacique? Airport stole the one I was bringing back...

My boyfriend and I stayed for our anniversary vacation and we had an unimaginably wonderful time. The food every day was amazing, the people were very amicable and helpful at all times, and the excursions were a blast. I had no idea I would have so much fun at the excursions. Everyone went above and beyond to give us a five star experience. I had the time of my life here and plan on returning since there's so much more to explore that I didn't get a chance to. I would definitely recommend to anyone that's adventurous and open-minded. Pura vida!

This was my first time ever leaving the United States and everyday that I spent here in Costa Rica was amazing, such a great hotel, food was amazing, and beautiful sites. The people here are the nicest and most helpful people I've ever met, I lost my phone on a bus and the receptionist called a taxi to get my phone for me. I highly recommend this for anyone that's looking to have an amazing time and I definitely plan on coming again
