Owner description: Aquaterra Adventures is the only Indian company to be rated twice in a row as best adventure travel outfitters on Earth, in a global survey by National Geographic Society, 2008 & 2009. We have been running trips and tours for the discerning traveller throughout the Indian Himalayas since 1995, yet the experience of our travel personnel dates well beyond that, to years of leading trips throughout the Indian Himalayan belt. We believe that an adventure travel outfit is only as good as its guides. Good equipment, food and guides is what makes an outdoor trip an experience to savour.

This company does everything great to make your adventure enjoyable and memorable. Your travel through the country to reach your point of take off as well as your return are coordinated and orchestrated to the best. Food through the trip is always safe and very tasty, a food that you can eat with joy as well as experience some of the local comfort. The guides in the rafts are knowledgeable and skillful (I am also a guide from around the world so I can speak with knowledge) as well as being a joy to be with. Activities are fun as well as team building. You do not need rafting skills to participate, however it helps to be able to follow directions. I had to choose a 2017 date for when did you travel, but it was before that date. While I have done guide type work around the world, this trip was strictly for enjoyment without any need to work or any incentives. My history does allow me to make proper judgement evaluations as to skills of the company, the equipment, risks presented, enjoyment presented, and give a true evaluation, actually being more critical as a result. I can recommend this company and now that I don't do this form of work anymore (9 years) I would actually go on any trips with this company. Recommend

Aquaterra Adventures are beyond excellent in every way, and I strongly recommend them to anyone considering an action adventure in India. Their guides are excellent in every way, and organisation and equipment - top quality. We could not be happier.

We have just returned from trekking the Kuari Pass, a 6 day 6 night linear trek of 70km graded as Moderate (in parts challenging) which took us up to 3690m.

We were a large group of 22 trekkers- so we had 4 guides, 7 cooks and camp site helpers, 14 horsemen and 30 horses. It was perfection at every moment, Aquaterra made it work so well- and looking back I am not sure how they did it. To organise all the food, equipment- and more challenging- us all - was genius.

We have enjoyed the most amazing, breathtaking (in every way!), exhilarating and memorable week of our lives. Together with Aquaterra we have scaled heights, up rock slides, down shale slopes whilst meeting 1000 goats, bathed in icy waterfalls and challenged ourselves. We have seen another side to the absolute beauty of India, the Himalayan mountains, the sacred Nanda Devi, the snow topped mountains and high meadows - and just as important- the absolute beauty of everyone we met along our way, from school children, teachers, mothers to goat herders, horsemen and of course, of the Aquaterra team.

Rana excelled and impressed us all. He lead us confidently and superbly. Not one injury, no altitude sickness, and all with a smile and a jest but when needed a serious message which we understood immediately. With 22 Alpha males and females he was just superb. So much affection for him! His headstand at the top of the Kauri Pass will remain with me forever.

Aashima is an absolute star who managed to climb into all our hearts. To be greeted by her each morning was a pleasure. She is so strong, so intelligent, so much fun and with unlimited patience and energy. She helped us all up the mountains, taught us Bollywood dancing, compared our quiz, sang by the fires, and provided a strong and steady leadership.

We trekked through remote countryside, occasionally walking through small villages, apparently less than 100 people a year take on this trek in the direction from Ghat to Auli.
We were rewarded with views that will remain with us forever.

Thank you Aquaterra!

This was our favourite line. Dhruv, Vinay and I would giggle every time we would say this.

I was a little apprehensive as I was travelling for the first time . But what a fantastic trip, I was looked after so well. I ran my first river- The Zanskar with Aquaterra. Best choice ever. Vaibhav, you have a wonderful team and I can vouch that no one knows these rivers they way these guys know. ATT was very responsive to emails. Their checklist was just perfect. Simply follow what they say - as in what you need to carry or what you need to leave behind at every stage or be it follow rules of acctlimatizing and you will be just fine. Thanks to ATT met interesting like minded people, Vinay from Agra and Vikram from Delhi. I am so glad I met them. The most impressive about ATT was that they still went ahead with the trip inspite of low numbers. Very commendable.

DAY 1- We had a comfortable stay at the Mogol. Spacious rooms and hot showers. Average food. (Room No - 101, 102). Rested and hydrated.

DAY 2 - Only two of us on day 2. Spent first half of our day visiting monasteries- Shey, Thikse and a must visit Hemis. Lit butter lamp at the Hemis. Evening walk into the market was wonderful. Bought dry apricots to take back home. Dinner at Food Planet. 5 mins from Mogol. Humus was to die for. Thukpa, their traditional local soup was worth a try.

DAY 3 to DAY 5 - Three of us all excited for the coming week of being outdoors. Outdoors is a way to coonect with yourself. My first step and now craving for more. Driving across Kargil, Rangdum, Remala. Lovely views of Nun Kun peaks. Driving over the Pensi La at the bottom of which is the Drung Durung Glacier. Spectacular view! There is some kind of a magnetic pull that these mountains have. Stayed at D’Zojila in Kargil. Take river side rooms and not to miss the Chilly (Cottage) Cheese ( we ordered during tea time ). Rangdum was very cold and one of the most beautiful camp site. We bid goodbyes to our backpacks and transferred into dry bags for the next 6 days.

DAY 6 to DAY 11 - was introduced to the thrill and adventure. A different campsite every day and sleeping under the blanket of stars. It was as though the entire milky way was there to greet us. Vinay was out with his tripod every night and I was like his assisstant flashing the torch as told. Got some great pictures. Zero connectivity and just by the river. New rapids every day and loved to challenenge myself. One realises ones potential as I always underestimate my self. Hope I can come back for much much more.

Vaibhav’s Team Of Aquaterra - Lot of warmth coming across. Lot of experience. Dhruv has lost count of the no of times he has guided Zanskar. Dhruv briefed us every single day of what was expected the next day. It gave us the much needed confidence. They know what they are doing, so simply listen and do all they have to say. Safety is their first priority. They do it with absolute ease. We had short treks/hikes/long walks nearly every day. Went for all. Good way to see the villages.

ATT Food - Nourishing food. Well thought menu. I am a vegetarian(no eggs no mushrooms) and had no issues at all. The food was better than home. Lavish spread for breakfast. A differernt cuisine every day. Dry lunch was also a treat. 4pm tea, 5pm snacks- hot pakoras to samosas to bhel to peanut bhel….6.30 hot soup- loved it. 7.30 dinner - can you imagine pizzas, pastas, paneer, chinese, continental. You know it. The guys having non veg loved tuna the most.

Tents and karri mats were neat, clean and in good condition. Basic toilet tents were put up at every campsite. All our needs were taken care off.
Wet suits, splash jackets, life jackets and helmets were perfect. Absolutely clean.
ATT is slightly expensive than others but with the amount of effort they take, the proffessionalism and lot of warmth , one just cannot think of anyone else. Viabhav, you guys Rock!

I have come back home with a lot of gratitude. Thanks to ATT. Coming back for Brahmaputra and all the rivers listed in ATT!

We booked Aquaterra from Sydney, Australia as my wife (originally from Pune India) had heard a lot of good things about them in the past. We specifically wanted to do a moderate trek, as my sister-in-law and niece from Pune would be joining us.
The booking agent at Aquaterra was quite helpful in sorting out the options, and given the timing and our requirements was able to organise a group to trek Dodital in late May, early June. The price was reasonable, and the timing worked.
One word of caution, Aquaterra are not like a western full service trekking company. It is your responsibility to get to the point of pick up, which in this case was Haridwar. We had to organise getting to Delhi, and getting on the train to Haridwar from Delhi. Aquaterra did book the tickets but "forgot" to forward them to us, so there was a lot of angst trying to contact someone that early in the morning (6:00am) as we did not know which carriage to get on. We jumped on the train anyway and my wife sorted it out with the train conductor who had us listed on the manifest. Lucky she is a Hindi speaker, for a foreign tourist this would have been disaster. Aquaterra should sort out the travel arrangements and have someone there to ensure the travelling party is OK, don't assume everyone is a local!
From Haridwar we travelled to Uttarakashi and Camp Kufloon which was the first nights stay. The drive was over 7 hours which was not pleasant but expected. Camp Kufloon is quite basic however comfortable and the hosts are very hospitable.
The hike up to Dodital and Darwa Pass was challenging enough and we were very well looked after by the guides. They set everything up and the mules carried all our gear so all we needed to do was walk! The campsites were all very nice and our guides went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible despite the daily afternoon and evening rains. The food was incredible, at least 4 to 5 dishes for the main meals and vegetarians are very well catered for. I'd do another trek with them for sure.
In summary, great trek, very good service, but look after the connections for foreigners a bit better.

Dear Andy

Thank you for your review of your trek with Aquaterra Adventures. Am glad you enjoyed the trek leadership, the food and the team that set it up for you.

I must admit to being a bit confused about the problems with the transfers. As was communicated to your wife, your tickets were Wailtlisted as May is a very busy time for the Indian Railways. Your tickets were only confirmed a day before departure and were sent to your wife the same afternoon, well in time for your train.

We hope this has not soured your experience with us and hope to see you on an Aquaterra Adventure soon!
