Having covered the cultural triangle in Anuradhapura on 7th of August,we could obtain a splendid experience by watching the Kandy Perahera festival on its first procession, yesterday. It was with the incredible support we received from Sri Lanka Kandy Perahera Day Tours that we could enjoy our tour to its best.

The Kandy Esala Perahera (the Esala procession of Kandy) is a grand festival celebrated with elegant costumes and is held in July and August in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. A unique symbol of Sri Lanka, the procession consists of many traditional local dances such as fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandyan dances and various other cultural dances, in addition to the elephants who are usually adorned with lavish garments.

This was the third time I have had the privilege to attend the Perahera in Kandy. This time I visited with my daughter, grandchildren (teenagers) and a friend. The elephants and entertainers (musicians, dancers, pole walkers, fire twirlers) put on a spectacular display and the image will stay with me forever. The 3 hours was a little long for the grandchildren but we would all love to see this again. Beautiful country and beautiful people. Given the opportunity I would attend this again.

By chance my stay in Kandy coincided with the Perahera Festivals first night. Just over 90 minutes of dancers, musicians, whip crackers, and beautifully illuminated elephants is an evening I shall never forget. If you visit to Kandy during Festival time then you simply must go.
