The lonely planet says: a major obstacle is avoiding hassle of the guides, when climbing up the vulcano. This is an UNDERSTATEMENT. As long term travellers we were used to pushy guides. But this was a whole different experience!

After strollig through Toya Bungkah for 2 minutes, we were stopped by a guy who did not allow us to walk any further. We didn't even want to go up the vulcano since it was already late.

After an argument, the guy started chasing my boyfriend with the moterbike and throwing rocks at him. Two other tourists tried to calm him down (we asked them for help), but he was psychotic. He called his friends to join him. When we visited the local police, they did not do ANYTHING, as they are part of the game. The only way to avoid further trouble, was to flee the town as soon as possible, while still shaking from fear. Although I am a long term traveller, this was by far the worst experience.

Please do not go to this vulcano and sponsor the local maffia. There are many more nice vulcanoes in Indonesia.

What an amazing experience... there's something magical about this trekk, starting off at 2am from our hotel w3 headed off. Bit of a drive from legian but was worth it as you get too see some sites of the beaten track. When we arrived it was freezing but of course the guides have coats to rent (they think of everything) we started off in the black of the night, it was incredible watching all the torch lights climbing the volcano. To be honest I found some parts hard going on the legs and I wanted to turn back but so glad I didn't. When we reached the top we had breakfast while waiting for the sunrise and by god the view was breathtaking. It was something I'll cherish for ever. Definitely worth the visit.

We organised the tour with a taxi man who organised a lovely guide for the 4 of us. We are 4 girls in our 20's and this hike is very manageable! You trek up in complete darkness with only your torches and the stars. It's full of other people and guides it's really sociable! This was the best sun rise I have ever seen. It was freezing waiting at the top so being warm clothing.
Please do this- you won't regret it!

We climbed Mount Batur to see the sunrise. This was a highlight of our tour around Bali. It was even worth the 3.30am alarm call. Our guide was fantastic, she would hold your hand to help you up the steeper sections. The view at the top was fantastic. We could see across to Lombok. After sunrise everyone was sitting around eating some breakfast and a troupe of monkeys arrived.
