The lonely planet says: a major obstacle is avoiding hassle of the guides, when climbing up the vulcano. This is an UNDERSTATEMENT. As long term travellers we were used to pushy guides. But this was a whole different experience!
After strollig through Toya Bungkah for 2 minutes, we were stopped by a guy who did not allow us to walk any further. We didn't even want to go up the vulcano since it was already late.
After an argument, the guy started chasing my boyfriend with the moterbike and throwing rocks at him. Two other tourists tried to calm him down (we asked them for help), but he was psychotic. He called his friends to join him. When we visited the local police, they did not do ANYTHING, as they are part of the game. The only way to avoid further trouble, was to flee the town as soon as possible, while still shaking from fear. Although I am a long term traveller, this was by far the worst experience.
Please do not go to this vulcano and sponsor the local maffia. There are many more nice vulcanoes in Indonesia.
