The hotel is located on the south west side of Shuhe Ancient Town, only a short walk to the central area which is filled with scenic waterways, the usual tourist shops and restaurants. Yet the hotel is far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet at night.

To get to the hotel from Lijiang train station, take public bus 16 to Qixing Street (Shangri-la Road) bus stop then change to bus 5 and get off at the last stop at the south west edge of Shuhe Ancient Town. Then it's a 5 min walk up a quiet road to the hotel.

This small hotel has all necessary modern facilities yet displays a lot of local style and character. My husband and I had a very relaxing stay here. We visited during low season and Owen, who was looking after the hotel during our 2 night stay offered us a choice of rooms and we got a nice spacious one with a huge comfortable bed, big TV and modern bathroom. As a previous reviewer advised, if visiting during winter, make sure to run the hot water tap for a few minutes until the water is hot before using the shower and use the electric blanket supplied to ensure a warm cosy bed. We also used their washing machine for free.

Owen really was a great host, very friendly and keen to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. He chatted with us over Yunnan tea (he can speak English), made us a simple but tasty Chinese breakfast and even took us on a walk up the nearby hill to a Tibetan wat and temple. His enthusiasm for Yunnan life and the natural environment really came through and we learned a little about the place and Yunnan tea from him. A well recommended choice if you're looking for a quieter relaxing stay in Shuhe old town.

We stayed 3 nights and were pleased with the location in Shuhe Old Town, much quieter than Lijiang Old Town. We had good access to plenty of restaurants and the usual array of tourist shops. The rooms were built around a central courtyard area and was lovely and quiet.

The room was nothing fancy and we had a few difficulties with obtaining hot water, but as this was our first stop in China we had a lot to learn. You need to turn the water on several minutes before you want to shower and then you're pretty right. The bed was the standard firm Chinese style, but the linen was clean. Bathroom was average and could have done with some repairs, but nothing major. We would rate this as an average 3 star hotel by Australian standards. We didn't pay a lot, so were satisfied. The air con didn't work that well but we were saved with an electric blanket.

We got upgraded to a larger room which was much better than the smaller one we'd booked. Although only a small hotel it was pretty quiet. Wifi was free but pretty slow in the room. It was better in the breakfast room.

Breakfast was included and was freshly cooked for us. We choose to eat traditional Chinese breakfasts as we find the quality is much better than their attempts at cooking western style.

Amanda, the hotel manager, was warm, welcoming and very helpful. She took us to a tea house and restaurant and helped us order as none of the staff spoke English, but we specifically requested to eat at a local restaurant and not a tourist one. She advised us on prices to pay for meals and where to avoid the overpriced tourist spots. She could arrange tours onsite, but we already had a guide and driver organised. Her English was very good and was easy to communicate with. Laundry was done for us for about 20CNY which was a fantastic price.

Would I stay again, possibly. The location was great, the hotel and room was a little tired. But value for money was excellent. It was clean and comfortable enough.

Room Tip: Upper floor for more privacy and go with a larger room

We stayed here for 5 nights during the golden week. It is just a 10 minute walk to the old town city centre.

Amanda did everything she could in order to make our stay worthwile.

We borrowed bikes, she got our bustickets, got a pickup from the bus station, a free roomupgrade and lots more!! Just wonderfull, we would come here again!

The set up of the place is very nice. It's rather far from everything else. The staff were nice however, there were times we didn't feel they were really there for us. The inn keeper is not very people oriented, she's very money oriented and her questions and answers will show it when she's not given time to think about it.

The morning we've arrived, she arranged a pick up from the train station, and her colleague met us at the gates of Shuhe and took us to the hotel where there were no water bottles provided in the room.

Upon meeting her, we decided to take her recommendation and have her driver take us to the Snow Jade Mountain the next day.

He tried to get us with the oxygen bottle and the winter jacket scam. He kept urging that we needed these jackets or we may freeze to death without oxygen. That was only the beginning of the snow mountain trip... He waited for us at the entrance of the mountain while we venture forth. Upon leaving the mountain, we've called the driver to tell him that we're coming down and will be back soon, he just told us to call him when we get off the bus. When we got off the bus and called him, he said to call him when we get to the 3rd parking lot. We argued for him to pick us up since he is our driver, but he refused us and told us to walk to where he's located. Since he refused, we decided we should just use another driver as there were a few standing around but we needed to let the inn keeper know first. We decided to call the Inn keeper and the first question she asked was who's going to pay the driver.

Granted, the driver made all of the mistakes, it was her response that made us not feel welcomed.

This incident had a spiraling effect on us, and we've decided to take the next day flight even if we though we could have stayed another night and fly out the following day at a lower price. We booked our own flight and our own driver for a set time for pick up.

When we were leaving, she kept asking about the driver and how we contacted him. At first, it seemed like she may have had good intentions and that maybe she was worried and she had to make sure we had a good driver, however, that quickly changed when she met up with him. She requested his business card and starting talking business immediately while we were waiting to leave.

The reason this place received a 2 star review is because they had free laundry and it is a very nice bedroom and courtyard. I'd have to say the staff is lacking the hospitality mindset and it felt like she was acting.

Stayed 2 nights during Spring Festival and it was very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and met us at the main gate of Shuhe so we didn't get lost trying to find the place. They also cooked a special breakfast for me when I came down with a stomach bug (not in any way related to my stay at Lu House).

Shuhe Old Town is a great and more relaxed option if you don't want to stay in the hustle and bustle of Lijiang Old Town. Lu House is a 5 minute stroll out of the main part of Shuhe and is nice and quiet. I'd recommend Lu House - it's been one of the highlights of a year of living/traveling in China.
