To be honest - we did not actually stay in his fantastic boutique hotel . We only had by chance , a thorough tour of it, visiting most of the rooms and public area . The Alza was opened only on November 15th . And our visit of Kyoto was on the last three days of October .
Here's the story :
As we were leaving Shinmonzen Dori , turning right into Yamato Oji Dori , on our way to Sanjo Station , our cameras on stand-by , we saw the interesting entrance of the place , thinking it was another antique gallery (like the beautiful galleries on Shinmonzen) . As we started taking photos of the entrance walls , someone invited us inside , and only then did we realize it was an hotel , being on its last days of preparations for the grand opening . Amazed at the calm beauty of the cool decor , we asked if it was possible for us to see the rooms , "With pleasure" - was the answer . And this when our tour begun . Beautiful spacious rooms , state of the art washrooms , some of rooms looking down at the Kamo river . The atmosphere is rich yet calm , combining traditional Japanese design and modern western one . Also we were very impressed with the welcoming smiling attitude of the hotel staff that accompanied us during our tour.
The Alza is so nice - we thought we can recommend it as an attraction !!!

Room Tip: Upper floors overlooking the river .
