This hotel is in the very center of old Kyoto - perfect location.
The busstop to all the tempels is in 3 min walking distance - and they even have a free shuttle bus to Kyoto station which goes regulary (schedule is on the hotel homepage).
The hotel is very modern and although traditional Japanese.
The rooms are spacious and clean, with a very good bed!
The staff is friendly and speaks mostly some English - they are very friendly and caring. The breakfast is okay,
The internet you can completly forget - it is sooooooo bad - they really have to improve the WLAN-infrastructure!!! But this is the only negative point.
We can fully recommend this hotel!

I have visited Kyoto on several occasions over the past few years. This was my first stay at The Celestine.

The positives are that it is modern and clean and is reasonably well located on the Gion side of town. Some 15 minutes or so reasonably easy walk from the town centre. Service was efficient and polite but not particularly personable. There is free WiFi which worked well and a safe.

My qualified assessment reflects:

- while the decor is smart it doesn't feel particularly inviting;

- service is polite but not particularly warm and smiling;

- check-in was not until 3pm - there was no suggestion that on arrival (at about 11am) staff might see if a room was free or would be free earlier than 3pm;

- the double room was comfortable if on the small side - the view from the window on the second floor (Room 202) was straight out onto hotel infrastructure, there was no view and no attempt to soften the outlook;

- the breakfast room was quite small and the service area where you help yourself to a buffet style breakfast (which was good without being extensive) was very cramped, guests had to keep squeezing past each other as they chose from the breakfast selection.

The cost for two nights was 74,360 YEN plus 3,240 YEN per person for breakfast. This didn't represent for me particularly good value for money overall compared to equivalent accommodation I have used in Kyoto and other larger cities in Japan.

This is a really wonderful hotel. My room (twin beds) was quite spacious with all the amenities you might want, including a Nespresso coffee machine. It was on the top floor and had a great view looking east to the mountains and a pagoda and Kiyomizu-dera temple. Service was absolutely the best....very friendly and welcoming, especially by the concierges who speak excellent English. The location is very quiet, yet easily accessible to local sites, as well as a short walk to Shijo Street where you can get a bus to visit further-away sites. The place is not inexpensive, but it's worth every penny!

Also, I second the recommendation to have breakfast at Sagan (down the street from the hotel), and to skip the expensive version at the hotel (which no doubt is excellent). Sagan is a laid-back café and has some western food as well as Japanese.

Room tip: Try to get a room on the top floor with a view eastward.

I just checked out a few hours ago (they allowed a late check out since we have a little one). We stayed here for 5 days, it was fantastic. It's a brand new hotel so everything is state of the art and very modern but it has a very traditional feel to it. Our favorite place is the spa downstairs, we're staying at another hotel that was ranked pretty high (I may leave a review after we leave) but we already don't like this place because it's no where near as nice as Celestine Kyoto. We were spoiled here..Everyone is very friendly and helpful and it's very white glove service. They cater to your needs for everything, including recommendations, places to eat, places to visit, etc. We really miss this place already.

Room tip: white glove, very accommodating

My partner and I stayed three nights in Gion and loved the Celestine Kyoto. We too a taxi from Kyoto Station after coming in from Kansai - it was only 1200 yen so not bad at all. They have a shuttle but we didn’t feel like waiting around for it. The hotel is beautiful - very natural feeling from the interior and the plants throughout. Check in was easy and we were given green tea while we waited. The only thing I would offer as advice to the hotel is that we have our passports but then had to fill in information from our passports on a different paper - seems kind of redundant. The staff showed us to our room - we had a comfort double. The only complaint I have is that our room faced the back of the hotel and into another building fire escape. I was going to ask to change rooms but I was too exhausted after checking in. The room is a decent size - the walls for the bathroom roll back to make it look bigger. It is probably standard with what you expect from Japanese hotels in terms of size. The location was great! Right in Gion and we were able to walk most places. We had the Icoca pass but didn’t use it much except to get to the golden pavilion on the 205 bus which was really easy. We honestly walked most places as the weather was beautiful. There is no gym here so that is something to note. My partner and I ran down to the Fushimi Inari Shrine (Kyoto Gates) most mornings which is only about 2 miles away and an easy run with the streets. Would definitely recommend because you can see the area before it gets super crowded. We tried the bar one night after eating out in Gion and it was okay. Kind of expensive but what do you expect from a hotel. Also, we didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, but would definitely recommend Sagan which is down the street and has a great variety and friendly staff! Overall, had a great stay and would recommend the Celestine Kyoto.
