Beautiful top class hotel. I loved the bidet! Very close to cruise terminal and earthquake park.
I must warn future guests of the following:
We inadvertently booked a room for 1 thinking that a two person stay would be the same as a one person stay (after all it is most everywhere else in the world), so it wouldn’t matter here, BUT it did. The second person ended up costing us half the room rate again. This was a shock and an unexpected huge cost. So beware when booking. Make sure you plug in 2 persons when getting your quotes.

Dear Rob S,

Thank you for your recent visit and taking the time to share your experience with us here on TripAdvisor.

We appreciate your kind words and helpful reminder to other travelers interested in traveling to Japan. It is very common in Japan for room accommodations to be priced per person rather than per room. We do recommend when booking online to enter the correct amount of persons to assure a correct quotation.

Thank you again for your shining review and we hope to see you again soon!

We loved the Oriental Hotel so much we are planning our next trip there already. We had not been to Kobe before and I chose this hotel based on reviews and also its convenient location to the station. I felt that staying on the waterfront might be a bit remote and I'm glad we made that choice. The location of this hotel is great. Very quiet at night yet only a 5 to 10 minute walk to the vibrant restaurant areas and Sannomiya station. The hotel is incredibly elegant - rich timber is used throughout as well as plush furnishings. The view of Kobe harbour when you first reach reception is amazing!! We booked a King bed harbour view room for our family. My 11 year old daughter slept on the sofa bed included in the room. There was ample space and wonderful amenities in the room. Superb bed and high quality linens. We received a free welcome drink at the bar on arrival and this was a great way to start our stay at the Oriental. We also had a complimentary mini bar in our room and this was a wonderful benefit because they do not allow children in the bar. Therefore, we could enjoy a pre dinner drink in our room each night while enjoying the harbour view. And the mini bar was replenished every day. Service was excellent. The front desk staff were super helpful and the person attending the front of the hotel literally came running when we arrived to help us get a taxi if we needed one. Breakfast was an absolute highlight. Since the hotel is a reasonable size but not too big, the quality of the food offering was exceptional and the ambience was always calm. Nothing like the larger hotels where breakfast can be a bit of a shambles. You can order eggs as you like them. My husband thought the eggs benedict were delicious. Overall we could not fault this hotel one bit. Especially when you consider the value for money. We look forward to our next visit.

Kobe is a place close to my heart, having lived here for many years. Now when back to visit folk here, this is definitely a great choice. It is a decent place to stay in the city centre, and much you might want to see/do is within walking distance. Fairly easy to take the tube from Shin-Kobe (the Shinkansen, or bullet train station), there are tube stations not too far (within five minutes walk). The main train station (Sannomiya) is a short taxi ride or a roughly 10-15 minute walk, depending on your pace. Closer still is Nankin-machi, as China Town is known here. Always energetic, but so many great restaurants to choose from. Food in the hotel is great, but Kobe is a food-lover's paradise, and it's all on your doorstep.

The physical geography of Kobe means it is a relatively narrow but long city, and so easy to navigate. The hotel might be in a relatively quiet part of town, but this geography means it is just minutes from all the action. Beyond the immediate area, the beautiful Ikuta Jingu (or shrine) is not far, nor is Harborland (full of rides/arcades/restaurants, and the Anpanman Museum, if you have children who are familiar with this cartoon character). If you do take a taxi back, make sure the taxi driver knows to take you to the Oriental Hotel on Kyomachi-suji, and not the Meriken Park Oriental Hotel.

The staff were professional, courteous and there was a decent level of English (so no need to worry should you not be able to speak Japanese). We arrived slightly early for our check in, but our room was ready and we were shown in our room. It is elegantly, even quirkily decorated, very much drawing on its history of being in one of the few ports initially open to foreigners in Japan.

Our room was on the Executive Floor, was well appointed, and had a good amount of space and a good bathroom. Toiletries were varied and plentiful, and of good quality. There was also a mini-bar, which was free (a perk of Executive Floor, I understand). The bed was comfortable, and the harbour view from our room was something I could take in for a long time.

The hotel looked after our luggage on the final day after checkout, and kept it down on the ground floor with the concierge. This meant upon our return, it was all ready and waiting, without us having to go up to the reception again.

So, all in all, would we stay here again? Given how good everything was (including communication before arriving), I would definitely look to stay here on our next visit. It is such a marvellous city, and staying here makes it that extra bit special.

Room Tip: Harbour view is great, but the city view, with Mr Rokko in the background, is not to be sniffed at.

Dear Kenlong C,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us here on TripAdvisor.

We deeply appreciate your kind words about our breakfast and service.
Also, while we would love to take the credit for our great location, the credit goes to our beautiful city and its wonderful people!

Youre also correct to say that higher floors would have a better view of the harbor, but if I may, our city night views can also hold their own!

We look forward to having the pleasure of serving you again some day. Thank you.

Dear Happy258,

Thank you very much for your concise and kind review.

We are glad that your stay with us was a comfortable one and that our service stood out as a high point.

Just a quick correction if I may, Chinatown is approximately 400m from our hotel entrance and is only a 5 minute walk away.
But even if you took the scenic route, Kobe is a beautiful town to get lost in.

We hope to one day have the pleasure of serving you again.
