We stayed in the East King for a week around Chinese New Year. The hotel itself is good value but its greatest value is its location. It is an easy walk to the West Lake or into Qinghefang Old Street. You can also get a bus from the West Lake which will take you up to the Lingyin Temple complex which is worth a visit, as is Hu Xueyan's restored house. The hotel is also near many very good local food outlets varying from restaurants to back street noodle houses. We particularly enjoyed a nearby Korean BBQ/Hot pot restaurant but there is great value food all over China and Hangzhou is no exception.

It snowed while we were there which made the West Lake somewhat less "dreamy" than the guidebooks suggest and with New Year it was very, very busy. If you can, though, don't miss the fountains at the west lake with their music and light show in the evening. Most evening there is a night market just outside the hotel too which is pleasant to wander around - but don't pay the asking price for anything.

We didn't have much call to use the concierge or other staff but when we did they were helpful and friendly.

Hangzhou is a bit off the beaten track but were we to return we would certainly consider staying here again.

We stayed at East King in October, right after Chinese Golden Week.
It is middle class hotel within appr. 15 min walk to West Lake. Around Hotel there are numerous small restaurants and shops, for those missing western food there is even Subway´s right in front of the hotel door. It will take you 10min and appr. 12 RMB to get to the main railwaystation or appr. 45min and 120RMB to the airport.
We booked a standard city view room. It was very spacious and clean, nothing special, but exactly what you need for a city trip. Receptionist was very nice, as we asked to get a higher floor; we got a non-smoking room in the 24ht floor. I am not sure about staff English, since I speak Chinese. I saw from some over reviews that communication might be problematic if you have any special wishes. But in our case staff was very polite and helpful, therefore I truly believe picture-dictionary would do it also here
There is one breakfast included in the price of every room. If you are staying in the double room, you will have to pay for the additional breakfast. We tried it once; I have to say it is pretty bad. It is obviously a Chinese breakfast, although with some coffee and even probably fried eggs. I really like proper Chinese breakfast, since variety of such a buffet is really huge and literally anyone could find something delicious to it there. But Breakfast offered in the hotel is really poor. Therefore you better try street eateries in front of the hotel or make a walk to the Eastlake to find one of the numerous Starbucks shops. Shall you still want to try hotel breakfast, be careful, hotel staff wants you to sign a blank receipt, absolutely nothing on it, and they want you to put your signature there! So make sure, you refuse it and they first print out the correct receipt for you to sign.
Right in front of the hotel there is a bike rental station, which is very convenient.
Hangzhou is a bike city – there is a largest IN THE WORLD net of public bikes for rent (over 60.000 bikes). Therefore make sure to get a tourist Z card for bike rental. You can do it in one of the kiosk at the bike rental station – they are everywhere. You will have to leave a deposit of 300 RMB per card. But 1st hour of bike renting if for free, therefore if you change your bike every hour, you would ride the whole time free of charge. In the end of your stay you can return your card in any of the kiosks and get your deposit back with small deduction of 10RMB for the service provided.
There are some rush hours, when it is difficult to get a bike – in the morning between 8 and 9 am, and in the evening app. Between 5 and 6 pm. Obviously it is not only tourists who is using these bikes. Also make sure to check tires and breaks of your bike, since some of the bikes are pretty old.
We used these public bikes for entire weeks, it is just great, since you are saving troubles with traffic jam and problems with communication if you don´t speak Chinese. Don´t miss to explore Hangzhou´s surroundings i.e. Dragon Spring Village (Long Jing Cun - 龙井村) with it´s amazing tea terraces and the most famous green tea in China. It´s only 8km from city center away. Great opportunity for a bike tour!

The hotel is very well located, a couple hundred meters from the lake and one or two blocks from the main streets that have all sorts of good and well-known restaurants and malls.
In the evening, there is a market, just one step away. You'll probably have to go through this market which, for those who like shopping and do not mind crowds, it is great, but for others who do not want to fight their way through this cramped place: Avoid it and find another (although longer) way.
The staff was very friendly. We said that we preferred a room on the higher floors and they gave us one on the top floor (23rd).
The room was very big and clean. The bathroom was okay in size, but also very clean.
The only negative aspect about this room were the stains on the ceiling (probably mildew), but it is alright if you consider the price and stay for only one night.

We stayed in East King Business Hotel for three nights. We had a one-bedroom apartment with lake view (room 1915). The view was not particularly fantastic as the lake is still quite a distance away. For a really good lake view, one should stay in Hyatt Hotel which is just by the West Lake. Both the living room and the bedroom are spacious, and the apartment is clean. It was hot during our stay (around 38 degree Celsius). What a relief that the two air-conditioners in our unit worked well. Strangely, there is only an electric sterilizer in the kitchenette but no microwave or electric oven. This is not a problem for us as there are many restaurants in the neighborhood; the Chinese restaurant Caidiexian in the hotel is good. One breakfast voucher is given for each apartment every day, and additional voucher costs 25RMB (about 4USD). However, the choices are rather limited.

The hotel is located at Yuewang Road, just 100 meters from Pinghai Road. Walking along Pinghai Road to the west for about 15 minutes, you reach the West Lake where a musical fountain show is performed every half-hourly from 7 pm to 9:30 pm. Although the show is smaller in scale as compared to that of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, it is still an enjoyable event with accompanying music like “O Sole Mio”, “Nessum Norma”, “Time to Say Goodbye” and “The Blue Danube Waltz”.

In the evening, the streets near the hotel become a night market (see photo), with hundreds of stalls selling all sorts of things. From the bus stop just outside the hotel, one can take bus Y7 to the Lingying Temple, a main attraction of Hangzhou. In addition, there are many buses plying along the Pinghai Road, including some that go to the famous West Lake, the main attraction of Hangzhou. Check with the hotel service desk for derails. The West Lake is worthy of multiple trips.

I lived at this hotel in 2008 and had great memories of high quality ammenities (ie. pool, gym, steam/sauna). I have returned and to my dissatisfaction, the hotel is not being kept up properly. The locker rooms are disgusting, the pool is not well kept (no chlorine & roof is leaking) and many machines in the gym are broken. Promises are being made that this will be fixed but knowing the managment I doubt it will happen. NEED MGT CHANGE!
