This was one of those places I felt wasn't a must view but was still very interesting. I wouldn't go as far as saying it was incredible but it was certainly well set out and it was one of the better house museums I saw in Moscow.

Thank Aleksandr O

Here in Nikitsky Boulevard, near the New Arbat street is located
this house-museum of Nikolai Vasilevitch Gogol, one of the greatest russian writers (1809 - 1852). We were nicely surprised, looking at newly restored mansion, where Gogol spent his last four years of life.
In the same time, it is the only place in Moscow, that keeps the memory of his last years. We've had the tour guide, who gave us a quite large account about the Gogol's life and work and naturally about the house, we were in. In this house Gogol worked on the second volume of Dead Souls and unfortunately burnt the manuscripts and threw them in the fireplace, which still exists in the very spot.
Also in this very house in 1852, he died.
We passed through several rooms of the manor, that is divided in the living room , the cabinet, then ,so called " Government Inspector" room, that implies at his great play, also, here is research library, exhibition hall and memorial museum.
In front of the hause, in the courtyard, there is a monument to Gogol in the sad posture ,surrounded by some of his better-known characters in bas-relief.
Great house-museum indeed !

When my relatives, who came abroad, asked me to go to Gogol House Museum I thought that it will be a common house, with old furniture and we shall skip it very fast. When we came we were very surprised to see great, interesting, modern and technologically attractive museum. All staff was so friendly, talked to us, and told a lot of interesting stories and life facts of the great writer. If you will visit it, please ask to switch on all sounds and stories on speakers and you will get a great pleasure!

We happened upon the Gogol house close to closing time. The guides spoke little English but were gracious and welcoming. We were able to read information about each room in English and there are audiovisual effects to lend an atmosphere to each space

I read Russian, which certainly addedto the experience, but my husband and friends do not and very much enjoyed it.

The final room contains wonderful exhibits including touch-screen photos of Gogol's life and contemporaries (in Russian, but the photos are great).

What they have done with the building is absolutely fantastic! If you take an excurtion, you will hear a great story about one of the best Russian writers, they also have some tricks in each room, you need to ask to turn them on! Very modern and at the same time warm-hearted pleace.
